CCTV catches cop stealing phone
NAGPUR: A CCTV camera caught a police constable stealing a mobile phone from a shop at Veterinary College Square, Seminary Hills on Tuesday afternoon. The accused Arvind Tekam (32), a resident of Surendragarh, has been posted at police headquarters from the past five years.
Tekam, a regular customer at the shop, stole the phone that was used to recharge prepaid accounts of customers. The shop owner Balwant Singh Sapra had gone to fill water in the cooler while the other salespersons were busy with customers when Tekam, who was there to collect his own repaired handset, pocketed the cell phone.
Singh realized in the evening that the phone was missing and inspected the CCTV footage at the shop, which revealed that Tekam was the culprit. However, when Singh called up Tekam, he denied the charge and refused to return the phone. Desperate, Singh handed over the footage to a neighbour, who works for a local cable channel. The channel aired it on Tuesday evening, after which police contacted Singh and asked him to file a complaint. However, Tekam was not arrested until Wednesday evening.
