Did you know that Preityís role in Kal Ho Naa Ho was first offered to Kareena who turned it down by quoting a sky-high price? That movie shaped Preityís career and made her a superstar. Or that Kareena turned down Page 3 which eventually launched Konkona Sen Sharma as a formidable actress? Not to mention the film became a National-Award-winning sleeper hit. SBO takes a look at anticipated upcoming films in which the director didnít get his original choice. These films are sure to redefine careers.
Housefull: The item song, Apni toh jaise taise, was supposed to feature Sushmita Sen but for unknown reasons, it didnít work out. Sajid Khan then wanted Katrina Kaif to recreate her magic with Akshay Kumar but the leading ladies (Deepika, Lara and Jiah) put their foot down. After that, Ritesh suggested his Aladin and Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai co-star Jacqueline Fernandez who is now doing the jhatkas and matkas with the three guys in the song.
Kites: The makers were in a fix over the casting of Hrithikís Salsa student character because they wanted a powerful actress who has no qualms with bold tones. They wanted her to have an international appeal. They considered Sonam but she was too demure, Indian even to do a bold role. Anurag Basu took the role to his favourite, Kangna Ranaut who agreed because of the scale of the film. She has now been sidelined in the promos but loved working with Hrithik. Kites is a huge film after all!
Thank You: Aneez Bazmee originally wanted his favourite girl, Katrina Kaif for his mad-cap comedy but she didnít have dates as she will get busy with Running with the Bulls and Dostana 2. So he signed on Sonam Kapoor opposite Akshay Kumar instead. Sonam will play a tennis champion and this will be her first commercial comedy.
Mausam: Shahid and Pankaj Kapur were looking for a fresh and beautiful face for the film. The producers were going to launch a nationwide hunt but realized the impracticality of it. Sonakshi Sinha was almost signed, Shahid wanted to work with Katrina and they even auditioned Shraddha Kapoor but Sonam Kapoor eventually landed the lead role of a Kashmiri girl on Supriya Pathakís recommendation.
Lamhaa: This Rahul Dholakia thriller was supposed to be Karisma Kapurís comeback role but she opted because she was uncomfortable and insecure about shooting in Kashmir. With her fair skin, light eyes, brown hair and delicate figure, Lolo would have made the quintessential Kashmiri girl and we are sure she would have delivered a knock-out performance under the Parzania director. Alas, she opted out and Bipasha Basu stepped in her shoes.
Crooked: Excel Entertainmentís thriller directed by Abhinay Deo was supposed to be headed by Aishwarya Rai and hubby Abhishek with a supporting cast comprising Kangna Ranaut, Sarah Jane Dias and Shahana Goswami. Aishwarya opted out due to date issues. She has been replaced by the equally beautiful and striking, Sonya Jehan. Going by the acclaim she got for her supporting roles in My Name is Khan and Khoya Khoya Chand, it is safe to say that she is a talented and graceful performer.
Rock Star: Katrina Kaif was on the top of the list because of the success of Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani but Imtiaz Ali wanted to cast a fresh face opposite his hero, Ranbir Kapoor. He almost finalized Anushka Sharma, who is relatively new, but dropped her in favour of pretty supermodel Diana Penty who will make a dream debut under the aegis of the masterful director.
