IPL vs Drama on TV
It’s considered one of the biggest face-offs. No we aren’t taking about serials versus reality shows. It’s about cricket on one side and everything else on the other.
When the Indian Premiere League (IPL) first started, it gave general entertainment channels (GECs) a huge blow. But, gradually, the channels have worked out their own strategies to keep their boats floating amidst the cricket waters.
Sony Entertainment Television (whose sister channel Set Max telecasts the IPL matches) did make significant changes to their lineup of shows for the IPL. Says Ajay Bhalwankar, programming head, “Our sister channel is telecasting the IPL matches. There is no competition, but we have made changes keeping the audiences’ interest in mind. We introduced a new show Godh Bharai at 7.30 pm, before the matches begin. From 8 pm to 11 pm the shows that are already on air will be untouched. But the significant change will be in the 11 pm time slot, which is after the matches are over. We are shifting weekend shows like Rishta.com and Powder to the weekday 11 pm slot.” Commenting on the reasons for the shift in shows, Bhalwankar says, “The aim is to provide the viewer with fresh stories before the matches begin and after they are over.”
Never mind the fact that these serials have not been generating good TRPS, but the channel still prepared itself to combat the cricket fever.
Channels can not afford to ignore the IPL considering cricket is almost like a religion in our country. “For us, the IPL is a very strong competitor,” says Nikhil Madhok, VP marketing, Imagine TV. “We are not launching any new reality shows during the IPL after Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega. That’s because the viewership for reality shows is mostly the youth and men who will be hooked on to IPL.” Instead, the channel will introduce soaps for its faithful followers. “The majority of our viewers are from the Hindi heartland. They will wield the remote in most homes from 8 to 11; hence apart from the current crop of soaps, we replaced Rahul Dulhaniya... with Jamuniya and Kaashi. The line-up for us is good and strong and we are looking at combating the threat from the IPL with these power-packed shows,” explains Madhok. While Zee TV introduced the new show Do Saheliyan...Kismat Ki Kathputliyan, revolving around two friends from Rajasthan, again with a rural set-up, they are banking heavily on their already popular shows like Pavitra Rishta and Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, to sustain their good run.
And when you can’t beat them, join them. Colors has joined hands with the IPL to cash in on the popularity of the tournament by launching a series of entertainment shows around IPL and the players during this ongoing 45-day season. Leading the pack will be none other than a special edition of Fear factor — Khatron Ke Khiladi IPL Special, the channel’s flagship format show, including an awards night and many other events. Rajesh Kamat, Group COO, said at a press conference recently, “Cricket and Bollywood are two of India’s biggest passions. While, the channel always had Bollywood and glamour, now with cricket added, it can’t get any bigger.”
However, some believe in just keeping things going the way they’ve been rather than forcibly getting in twists and turns in the serials. Says Rajan Shahi, producer of Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus, “Our shows do not bring in unnecessary twists and turns just to combat the IPL. Bidaai has been a show with the highest rating even when the IPL was launched. Our shows have been consistent in content and don’t tweak the storylines in the face of competition.” And the reason behind that is the audience which is mostly women from the Hindi heartland. “Thank God, the remote is in the right hands!” says Shahi.
