RGV serves notice to TV channel
Producers of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Rann have issued a legal notice to ETC Network Ltd, an entertainment television channel for projecting the quality and performance the movie to be very poor even before its release. The film’s director Ram Gopal Varma told reporters here today that the channel’s show Movie-Meter aired gave two point rating out of 10 because the film was not advertised on the channel.”This is a classic case of misuse of media’s right to freedom of press,” he said. The film releases on January 29. Copies of the legal notice was distributed to the media at a press conference addressed by the director.
According to the legal notice, the producers have asked the channel to tender an unconditional apology for the damage caused to their status and goodwill. It also asked the channel to telecast a clipping in the next episode of the show clarifying that the film was erroneously and unreasonably given the rating of ‘2 points’.The producers have threatened criminal and civil action, including damages and cancellation of the broadcasting license of the channel.”Our clients reserve their right to initiate appropriate action for damages to the sum of Rs 25 crore caused to them on account of telecast of the clipping unduly undermining the quality and performance of the film,” the notice said.Due to the potential damage caused by adverse pre-judgement of any event, media is barred from publishing any exit-poll survey, however genuine, until the last day of election is over.
Applying the same rationale, the press cannot be entitled to publish or telecast critical review of a film before its release since it would not only have an adverse effect on economic performance of the film, but also dilute the message proposed to be conveyed by the film, Varma said.Varma said Rann is about the relationship between the common man and the mass media and carries a social message in public interest. The film has been produced at a budget of Rs 30 crore.
