Cambridge University Cricket Club, where the legendary Ranjitsinhji played during his university days, is touring India for the first time and are set to play a number of matches in Delhi and Mumbai beginning Jan 10.

They will play matches at Roshanara Gardens ground in Delhi and Bombay Gymkhana stadium in Mumbai.

"Cricketers from Cambridge University jet off to India on Wednesday for their first ever tour of the country. The trip has been arranged to coincide with the visit of the Vice-Chancellor, Alison Richard, who is leading a delegation to strengthen historic links between the university and the sub-continent nation," the university website said.

The 14-member cricket squad will play two matches in Delhi and four in Mumbai on their 10-day tour, with the vice-chancellor and her party due to attend two of the games.

Chief coach Chris Scott said: "India is a cricket-mad nation and we are expecting the opposition to be strong. We have quite a busy schedule with six games in 10 days and we are heading a little bit into the unknown."

The varsity said there is an "historic link between Cambridge University cricket and India going back to the greatest names, Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji and his nephew Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, who both won cricket Blues at Cambridge University before going on to play for Sussex and England".

The tour also includes a friendly T20 bash against the British High Commission in Delhi.

The tour is being sponsored by pharmaceutical major Cipla, whose whose director Yusuf Hamied is an alumnus of Christ's College under the elite varsity.
