    Default Serena Williams Fined For US Open Tirade

    The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday said that Serena Williams has been fined $175,000 for her foul-mouthed tirade at the US Open.She will also face probation for two years.

    The world number one will face suspension from US Open in 2010, 2011 or 2012 if she commits a further major offence at a grand slam in the next two years. The fine will be reduced to $82,500 if she commits no further major offence through 2011.

    An ITF statement said, “On 9 November 2009, the grand slam committee administrator determined Serena Williams had committed the grand slam major offence of aggravated behaviour for her misconduct at the 2009 US Open.”

    Williams had lashed out at a lineswoman after a foot-fault call at the end of her US Open semi-final loss to Kim Clijsters. Serena was charged $10,500 as fine for her unsportsmanlike behaviour, the biggest given to a female player since records began in 1990.The total fine money of $175,000 includes the $10,500 penalty she has already received.
