    Default Fifth NE Business Summit to be on Jan 8-9 in Kolkata

    To attract outside investment to Northeastern states, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has organised a two-day Business Summit for the fifth time in Kolkata on January 8-9.

    Talking to mediapersons here today Tripura Commerce Minister Jitendra Choudhury said the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) had taken special initiative for the region to bring foreign investors, besides leading business groups, and asked the state governments to highlight the potential sectors in the summit.

    The Summit would also have separate special sessions on 'ASEAN-INDIA FTA: Opportunities for Northeast' and highlight investment in Infrastructure, Energy, Agro and Food Processing, Tourism, Information Technology, Skill Development and Healthcare, Mr Choudhury said.

    He stated that there would be an exclusive session with Chief Ministers and Senior Ministers, Officials of North Eastern States where investors would be able to interact and added, ''Besides policy makers and administrators, the summit will offer a separate Investors Forum which would facilitate discussions among Investors, Bankers, Government, International entrepreneurs.'' All Northeastern states Chief Ministers and Industry Ministers, DoNER Minister BK Handique, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and Small Industrial Enterprises and Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahaya were scheduled to be in the summit to promote investment in the region, Mr Choudhury underlined.

    ''It has been an illustrious journey for ICC since 2002 when the first North East Business Summit took place in Mumbai and the subsequent three Summits in New Delhi and Guwahati respectively and last 82 foreign delegates and 11 Ambassadors/High Commissioners participated,'' he pointed out.

    Mr Choudhury maintained that this time also a good number of international delegations from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia would participate.
