Aamir Khan's magic does it again;'3 Idiots' makes Rs 100 cr in 4 days
After leaving cinegoers 'moist-eyed' with 'Taare Zameen Par' and dazzling viewers with his eight pack abs in 'Ghajini' last year, Aamir's 'inspirational act' as the free spirited Rancho in '3 Idiots' has set the box office on fire, fetching an unprecedented opening of over Rs 100 crore worldwide in the first four days of release of the film.
Released by Reliance Big Pictures in 2,126 screens worldwide, including 366 screens overseas-the widest release for any Indian film so far, '3 Idiots' has reported unprecedented box-office response from all over the world.
Directed by Raju Hirani (the master-mind behind blockbusters 'Munnabhai MBBS' and 'Lage Raho Munnabhai') with screenplay by Raju Hirani, Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 3 Idiots' has captured audience's interest like never before with its incisive look at the education system in India, its witty writing and terrific acting by the cast including Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Omi Vaidya, Javed Jaffrey and Mona Singh.
Inspired from Chetan Bhagat's bestseller novel, "Five Point Someone", '3 Idiots' has been successful in drawing huge crowds to theatres everywhere, from a small town like Wardha to a city like Chandigarh, from Mumbai to Delhi and from New York to Sydney.
The film, which was released on Christmas, opened to an excellent response across the country, and even abroad, grossing nearly Rs 13 crore on its opening day itself.
The opening day collections recorded for the film are more than that even for 'Ghajini', which had one of the biggest openings in the history of Indian cinema, with 30 per cent more earnings till Sunday night.
In the succeeding days too, '3 Idiots' continued to draw record crowds. In fact, the collections for the film have remained either steady and, in some case, even increased with each passing day. This is evident from the fact that its collections on Monday were more than that on Saturday.
What is remarkable about the film is that it is one of the rare films in recent times which has successfully drawn repeat audiences.
Infact, college students coming out of multiplexes in metros and small towns like Ahmedabad, Meerut and Indore have said they would come back again with their family to watch the film.
Says film analyst Komal Nahata of Film Information, an Indian trade journal that tracks box office performance,''Bollywood should be dancing, singing, rejoicing, shedding tears of joy.. '3 Idiots' has come like a tornado to smash box-office records and create new ones which may not be broken easily, at least in the immediate future." Trade sources said audiences in several parts of the country have said they have never seen such an overwhelming response for any film before, Hollywood or Bollywood.
Commenting on the huge success of the film, Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, "Response has been overwhelming from all over the world.
Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier that people liked the film but this is something else.'' ''We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced the number of shows of 'Avatar' and increased ours," added Chopra.
Chopra said '3 Idiots' is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend.
''Similarly in the US, I have been made to understand that '3 Idiots' would make highest profits ever for a Hindi film," he added.
With the success of '3 Idiots' , Aamir has scored a hat-trick of Christmas blockbusters for the last three years with 'Taare Zameen Par' (2007) and Ghajini (2008).
Infact, '3 Idiots' is among the rare Bollywood films that have been hailed by critics as well as audiences.
'Three Idiots' has been universally hailed by critics as among the best films to come out of Bollywood in recent times. The performances of Aamir, Madhavan, Sharman, Boman Irani and Kareena have also come in for a lot of praise from cinegoers as well as critics, who have ranked '3 Idiots' as among the finest films of Aamir.
This film has indeed added glory to the year end for Bollywood which has witnessed a lean patch this year with a series of big budget and much hyped films meeting with a lukewarm response.
