'3 Idiots' create Box Office history; grosses over Rs100cr in 4 days
Continuing its unprecedented run at the box office, Raju Hirani's '3 Idiots' has set new records in ticket sales in towns and cities across the world, grossing over Rs 100 crore worldwide in just 4 days.
Released by Reliance Big Pictures at 2126 screens worldwide, including 366 screens overseas -- the widest release for any Indian film so far -- '3 Idiots', has reported unprecedented box-office response from all over, sources in Big Pictures said.
An incisive look at the education system in India, '3 Idiots', which has caught the audience's imagination like never before with its witty writing and terrific acting by the cast including Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Omi Vaidya, Javed Jaffrey and Mona Singh, continues to draw record crowds and is setting new benchmarks for Bollywood films.
From a small town like Wardha to a city like Chandigarh, from Mumbai to Delhi and from New York to Sydney, theatres screening the film inspired from Chetan Bhagat's novel "Five Point Someone", has reported record-breaking collections.
Directed by Raju Hirani ( of 'Munnabhai MBBS' and 'Lage Raho Munnabhai') with Screenplay by Raju Hirani, Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 3 Idiots' chronicles the tale of three friends in an engineering college.
Souces in Big Pictures said what seems to have touched the right chord in people's heart is the witty writing and terrific acting and the incisive look which the film takes at the education system in India.
The film, which has also received critical acclaim, has already begun attracting repeat audiences.
Infact, college students coming out of a suburban multiplex in Ahmedabad and other cities have said they would come back again with their family to watch the film.
Commenting on the huge success of the film, its Producer Vinod Chopra said," Response has been overwhelming from all over the world. Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else.'' ''We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced 'Avatar' shows and increased ours," said Chopra in a statement.
Vidhu said '3 Idiots' is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend.
''Similarly in the US, I have been given to understand that '3 Idiots' would be highest ever collection for a Hindi film," he added.
Film Information, an Indian trade journal that tracks box office performance commented "Bollywood should be dancing, singing, rejoicing, shedding tears of joy. 3 Idiots has come like a tornado to smash box-office records and create new ones which may not be broken easily, at least in the immediate future."
