Wanted : SRK as Lalit Modi
Bollywood’S love affair with cricket continues, as a production company is soon coming up with a biopic on Lalit Modi, the mastermind behind the IPL series.
Called The Commissioner, the movie will focus on Lalit’s childhood, his growing up years and his success with the IPL. “Lalit is an intriguing person. He made the IPL a phenomenon and multiplied the BCCL’s income by hundred in one year. We spent a year researching his life and now we know more about him than the man does about himself,” says Shailender Singh, joint managing director of the production house.
The idea of making a movie on Lalit came during the second season of the cricket league. “He took the entire tournament to South Africa in 17 days and made it a phenomenon abroad. That, in spite the IPL being just a year old. Few people knew about it at the time. It takes a rockstar to do that,” says Shailender.
And he’s excited about the potential of the movie. “Bollywood movies based on cricket, like Lagaan and Jannat, have been successful. The combination of Bollywood and cricket makes for a potent story and I’m sure the youth of India would love to know more about the man behind the IPL success story,” he says. Shailender points out that the biopic will be informative as well as entertaining. “We’re here to entertain, so it will be a fictionalised biopic. We’re following the lines of Guru, the movie based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani,” he adds.
And Lalit himself is excited about the idea of the biopic. “We approached him during the Champions League. He was amused and interested. We have a ready script, but are waiting for a NOC from Lalit and then we’ll go ahead with the movie,” he says.
While nothing’s been finalised, Shailendra has a few actors in mind for the lead role. “I’d like to have Shah Rukh Khan for the lead role, as both men are dynamic and have high energy levels. They have similar personalities. Shahid Kapoor or Irffan Khan are also suitable for the lead role. While Irrfan is a complete contrast to Lalit’s personality, he is an intense actor and will be able to carry off the role well,” he says.
