Kareena Kapoor – latest interview
Kareena talks to CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand about films, love, family and friends.
Rajeev Masand: What is a fantastic actress like you doing in a vulgar, offensive ans sexist film like Kambakkht Ishq?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I DO DIFFERENT KINDS OF FILMS. I'M NOT GOING TO GET TYPECAST THAT I ONLY DO GLAMOROUS ROLES OR ROLES IN ART OR PARALLEL CINEMA. IT'S NOT THAT, I'M GOING TO DO DIFFERENT KINDS OF ROLES. AND WHAT IS AMAZING IS, PEOPLE THINK WHY SHOULD WE LEAVE OUR BRAINS BEHIND AND WATCH A STUPID FILM LIKE KAMBAKKHT ISHQ? WELL, MY ANSWER TO THAT IS, DON'T WATCH THE MOVIE. IT'S IN THE CINEMA IF YOU WANT TO BUY THE TICKET THEN GO WATCH AND IF YOU DON'T, THEN BE AT HOME.
WATCH A MOVIE, WHICH YOUR BRAINS FEEL TUNED TO OR WHICH MAKES YOU FEEL ELEVATED. THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO WENT TO SEE THE FILM AND THEY MADE IT A DECENT SUCCESS. SO, I THINK ACTORS SHOULD NOT BE BLAMED FOR ACTING IN SUCH A MOVIE BECAUSE EVENTUALLY PEOPLE ARE PAYING MONEY TO GO WATCH IT.
Rajeev Masand: What was the reaction the fans to you doing this film?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I THINK MY LOYAL FANS REACTED POSITIVELY. THEY THOUGHT I LOOKED GREAT IN THE FILM. THE STYLING WAS DIFFERENT. BUT EVERY ACTOR DOES DIFFERENT ROLES AND EVERY FILM DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THE ACE OF SPADES OR THE KING OF HEARTS. WE WANT IT TO BE LIKE THAT BUT IT'S NOT ALWAYS GOING TO BE LIKE THAT.
Rajeev Masand: You are one of the few actresses kids really like. Young girls want to grow up and be Kareena Kapoor. Do you feel responsible then?
KAREENA KAPOOR: OF COURSE I FEEL RESPONSIBLE. LIKE IF THERE IS A JAB WE MET THERE IS A GOLMAAL RETURNS ALSO WHICH PEOPLE LOVED ME IN. IT WAS ALSO A COMEDY.
Rajeev Masand: But it wasn't offensive.
KAREENA KAPOOR: NO IT WASN'T OFFENSIVE BUT IT DIDN'T GET FIVE STARS. BUT IN BOXOFFICEINDIA.COM IT'S ONE OF THE FIVE BIGGEST OPENERS EVER INCLUDING KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. SO, WHAT DO I SAY? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY?
Rajeev Masand: So one does different films for different reason?
KAREENA KAPOOR: YES AND ALSO GIVING INTO TEMPTATION WHEN PRODUCERS GIVE YOU THAT KIND OF MONEY. I'M ALSO A HUMAN BEING, A GIRL WITH ALL HEART; I DO ALSO GIVE INTO TEMPTATION JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE WOULD GIVE INTO TEMPTATION INTO ICE CREAMS AND CHOCOLATES.
Rajeev Masand: And since you don't give into ice-creams and chocolates...
KAREENA KAPOOR: YES, THEN LET ME DO THIS.
Rajeev Masand: What did your sister Karisma (Karisma Kapur) think of the film. She is fairly conservative and prudish right?
KAREENA KAPOOR: YES SHE IS QUITE CONSERVATIVE AND PRUDISH, BUT HONESTLY SHE ENJOYED THE FILM. SHE LAUGHED. SHE WATCHED IT ON DVD AND SAID SHE DIDN’T MIND IT AND THAT I LOOKED GREAT. HER ATTITUDE IS ALSO SAME, SHE'S BEEN THROUGH THE SAME PHASE WITH RAJA BABU AND OTHER FILMS. SO, SHE SAID THE FACT IS IF PEOPLE ARE CRITICISING THE FILM, THEN DON'T GO SEE THE MOVIE. THEN WHY IS THE AUDIENCE GOING THEN?
Rajeev Masand: Fair enough. We are going to see you in Main Aur Mrs Khanna, which is a love-triangle, where you are opposite Salman and Sohail Khan. Tell me how is it different with all your other love-triangles?
KAREENA KAPOOR: WELL, I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S REALLY DIFFERENT.
Rajeev Masand: That is really honest.
KAREENA KAPOOR: THE STORY IS THAT I'M MARRIED TO SALMAN, WHO HAS SOME UPS AND DOWN IN HIS PROFESSION SO HE MOVES ON AND TRAVELS TO SINGAPORE AND I GET LEFT BEHIND IN AUSTRALIA. THEN IT'S HOW I MEET SOHAIL AND WHAT HAPPENS. IT'S A SHORT-SWEET FILM. I DID THIS FILM PURELY ON THE BASIS OF MY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE KHANS. LOLO (KARISMA) AND SALMAN HAVE BEEN GREAT FRIENDS OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS.
Rajeev Masand: And they did a string of films which went on to become successful.
KAREENA KAPOOR: YES. SO, WHEN I WAS OFFERED THIS FILM, LOLO TOLD ME JUST DO IT. SOMETIMES YOU DO FILMS FOR JUST RELATIONSHIPS. I'M A GIRL WHO BANKS HEAVILY ON EMOTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS. TO ME, I RELY A LOT ON MY RELATIONSHIPS, EMOTIONS FOR DECISIONS IN MY LIFE. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. AND I HOPE THIS MOVIE DOES REALLY WELL, I'M SURE PEOPLE WILL LIKE IT. IT'S A SWEET MOVIE AND I THINK I'M LOOKING GOOD IN IT.
Rajeev Masand: Salman and you, both have very strong personalities. Do you both ever clash?
KAREENA KAPOOR: NO NOT A CLASH. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I SEE SALMAN THEN I GET ALL BABY. WE BOTH HAVE GOT SIMILAR PERSONALITIES. WE ARE BOTH ALL HEART, WE BOTH THINK FROM OUR HEART. APART FROM THAT HE TREATS ME LIKE A BABY BECAUSE HE HAS SEEN ME WHEN THEY WERE SHOOTING FOR NISHCHAY AND JAGRUTI, WHICH WAS YEARS AGO. SO, THAT IS MY RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. I THINK HE IS GREAT. AND IN THIS FILM OUR CHEMISTRY HAS COME ACROSS, THOUGH IN KYUNKI IT DIDN'T. THE FILM WAS NICE BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. I'M HOPING PEOPLE LIKE THIS MOVIE.
Rajeev Masand: You have just completed 3 Idiots with Aamir Khan. The interesting thing is that you and Aamir have been trying to work together since a long time but it's never worked out. What was this experience like?
KAREENA KAPOOR: THE MORE I SAY, IT'S NOT ENOUGH. EACH TIME I HEAR AAMIR'S, RAJU HIRANI'S OR THE FILM'S NAME, I'M ECSTATIC. IT'S THE BIGGEST THING FOR AN ACTRESS TO BE A PART OF THIS FILM. I'M THE ONLY GIRL AMONGST ALL THE MALE ACTORS AND THIS FILM WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AND IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT I'M A PART OF IT.
Rajeev Masand: You are friends with Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman. Is it awkward to stay friends with these guys, even though they are not friends with each other?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THEM NOT BEING FRIENDLY WITH EACH OTHER. BUT WE ARE IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE WE WORK WITH EVERYONE. I WORK WITH EVERY ACTOR; I DO FILMS FROM MY HEART IN WHICH I WANT TO BE IN. I WORK IN A COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE. I WANT TO BE IN A COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE. WE WORK FOR A 100-120 DAYS ON ONE MOVIE, SO, I NEED TO HAVE A NICE ATMOSPHERE TO WORK IN.
WHAT IS LUCKY TO ME IS THAT SALMAN, SHAH RUKH AND AAMIR ARE ALL LOLO'S HEROES. THEY HAVE ALL WORKED WITH LOLO. IF IT'S SHAH RUKH, THEY WORKED IN DIL TO PAGAL HAI AND I USED TO BE ON THE SETS OF THAT. SALMAN AND LOLO HAVE DONE 10 MOVIES TOGETHER. AKSHAY AND LOLO HAVE DONE 12 MOVIES TOGETHER. AAMIR AND LOLO HAVE DONE RAJA HINDUSTANI. SO, EVERYONE LOOKS AT ME AS LOLO'S YOUNGER SISTER. SO, I THINK I'M JUST LUCKY IN THAT WAY. BUT I THINK I HAVE A GREAT EQUATION WITH ALL THE THREE KHANS. SHAH RUKH AND GAURI (GAURI KHAN) ARE LIKE FAMILY AS BOTH SAIF (SAIF ALI KHAN) AND I ARE EXTREMELY FOND OF THEM. WE ARE FREQUENT VISITORS AT THEIR HOUSE. I GUESS I'M JUST LUCKY TO BE WORKING WITH ALL THE THREE KHANS.
Rajeev Masand: You broke the ice recently with Aishwarya Rai, the two of you were seen dancing together at Karan Johar's party?
KAREENA KAPOOR: THERE WAS NEVER ANY ISSUE. THERE WAS NEVER A PROBLEM AT ALL WITH ASH. IN FACT SHE IS LOVELY AND WHENEVER WE HAVE MET SHE HAS ALWAYS SPOKEN TO ME. AND IN FACT SHE PEAKS REALLY HIGHLY OF ME. I'VE READ SO MANY INTERVIEWS OF HER ON THE NET. SO, WHY SHOULD THERE BE A PROBLEM?
Rajeev Masand: Has that eased the relationship with Abhishek Bachchan at all? There was a sort of an uncomfortable distance, wasn't there?
KAREENA KAPOOR: WHAT I'VE ALWAYS MAINTAINED IS THAT, TO ME, ABHISHEK IS THE FIRST ACTOR I EVER GAVE A SHOT WITH. TO ME, HE HOLDS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART THAT NO ACTOR AND NO PERSON CAN TAKE. SO, WHEN I LOOK AT HIM, I LOOK AT HIM WITH PRIDE, JOY AND HAPPINESS. IT'S SAD THAT THINGS WENT SOUR. IF HE CHOOSES NOT TO DO A FILM WITH ME IT'S VISA-VERSA BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND THE COMFORT LEVEL WILL NOT BE THE SAME. LIKE WISE, FROM MY SIDE AS WELL AND I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD JUST RESPECT THAT.
Rajeev Masand: I asked Saif this and now I'll ask you. When one is in a relationship with a person, one inherits their friends and enemies. Has it become awkward for Saif since you don't get along with a lot of people?
KAREENA KAPOOR: WHICH PEOPLE? HE DOESN'T EVEN GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. IF YOU ARE TALKING IN TERMS OF ACTRESSES, FRANKLY I DON'T THINK ANYBODY DOESN'T GET ALONG WITH ANYBODY. TODAY, EVERYONE GETS ALONG WITH EVERYONE; THEY ARE DOING WELL IN THEIR OWN SPACES. FROM MY SIDE AT LEAST THERE IS NO ISSUE.
Rajeev Masand: Saif said that you went out of your way to become friends with his friends Preity Zinta and Bipasha Basu?
KAREENA KAPOOR: THERE WAS NEVER A PROBLEM WITH PREITY. AND EVEN WITH BIPASHA, IT'S JUST BEEN THAT WE HAVE NEVER REALLY INTERACTED. IN FACT I INVITED HER FOR SAIF'S BIRTHDAY AND THAT IS THE TIME SHE CAME AND I THINK IT WAS REALLY SWEET. SHE ALSO MESSAGED ME AFTER GOLMAAL RETURNS TO CONGRATULATE ME ON THE SUCCESS OF THE FILM.
Rajeev Masand: So everyone is growing up then?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I THINK EVERYONE IS JUST MATURING. I CAN'T SPEAK FOR OTHER ACTRESSES BUT I CAN SPEAK FOR MYSELF THAT I'M COMFORTABLE IN MY SPACE. I'VE WORKED REALLY HARD TO GET WHERE I AM AND I WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE AND HARMONY AND I WANT PEOPLE TO LET ME BE THERE.
Rajeev Masand: What is the most positive change in your life that you credit Saif with?
KAREENA KAPOOR: HE HAS TAUGHT ME A LOT. THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT FLOAT AROUND. I OPEN A DAILY OR SWITH ON A TELEVISION CHANNEL AND THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE. WE STOPPED WATCHING TV BECAUSE I SEE SO MANY THINGS, WHICH I NEVER SAID OR DID. INITIALLY I WOULD BE CONSTANTLY CRYING AND TELLING SAIF AND HE WOULD TELL ME NOT TO REACT TO IT. HE ADVISED ME TO DO MY WORK AND LEARN TO RAISE BAR FOR YOURSELF. HE TOLD ME NOT TO GET AFFECTED BY IT AND PUT ALL THESE ENERGIES INTO 3 IDIOTS OR QURBAAN OR STEPMOM. AND IT HAS TRULY HELPED ME OVER THE LAST YEAR.
Rajeev Masand: You seem so wise. Are you all set for marriage then?
KAREENA KAPOOR: NO WAY. I'M NOT READY FOR THAT WORD. I'M NOT AT ALL READY FOR IT. IT'S A LOT AND RIGHT NOW WITH THE KIND OF FILMS I'M DOING AND THE KIND OF OFFERS THAT ARE COMING MY WAY, I'M IN A SPACE WHICH I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP FOR ANYTHING.
Rajeev Masand: So do you think marriage would mean the end of that phase and career?
KAREENA KAPOOR: NO, BUT IT DEFINITELY MEAN A LOT MORE TOWARDS A RELATIONSHIP AND A LOT MORE RESPONSIBILITY AS A WOMAN. THERE ARE TWO FAMILIES COMING TOGETHER. AND FOR WHAT EVER IT'S WORTH I'M NOT READY FOR IT RIGHT NOW.
Rajeev Masand: Your Jab We Met director recently secured a hit with his new film Love Aaj Kal. Though it's a hit, the general consensus was that Jab We Met was better.
KAREENA KAPOOR: I'M GEET FROM JAB WE MET. I THINK EVERY DIRECTOR MAKES DIFFERENT KIND OF MOVIES. I THINK IMTIAZ ALI IS GOD'S GIFT TO FILMMAKING, HE IS FANTASTIC. THE WAY HE TELLS A STORY, HIS SCREENPLAY, IT'S SO FRESH AND NEW. SO, HE WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENT FILM AND AS LONG AS HE SUCCEEDED THAT IS WHAT COUNTS. AND AS FAR AS JAB WE MET BEING BETTER IS THE CASE, WELL WHO IS THE HAPPIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD.
Rajeev Masand: Your Omkara director Vishal Bhardwaj recently made Kaminey. What did you think of it?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I LOVED IT. I REALLY LOVED KAMINEY. I THINK THE SECOND HALF OF THE MOVIE JUST BLEW MY MIND. BOTH SAIF AND ME TEXTED VISHAL AT 2 AM IN THE MORNING WHEN WE FINISHED WATCHING THE FILM. THE PERFORMANCES BY EVERYONE WERE GREAT. WE BOTH ENJOYED IT THOROUGHLY. I'M REALLY HAPPY PEOPLE ARE LIKING THESE KIND OF MOVIES.
Rajeev Masand: Everyone seems to be talking about this hot love making scene in Qurbaan between Saif and you?
KAREENA KAPOOR: IT'S A SCENE AND IT'S REQUIRED FOR THE FILM. I THINK RENSIL DESILVA IS FANTASTIC, HE HAS A NEW TAKE ON FILMS AND CINEMA AND WITH KARAN'S MIND TO IT, TO ME IT'S A VERY SPECIAL FILM. THE SCENE, EVERY SCENE IN THE FILM IS SPECIAL TO ME. I HOPE PEOPLE LIKE THIS. I THINK AFTER JAB WE MET, I THINK IT'S MY BEST ROLE.
Rajeev Masand: Are intimate scenes difficult to film for an actress? And was it easier doing it with a person who you were comfortable with?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I'M A PROFESSIONAL. WHEN WE ARE PERFORMING, IT'S FOR THE CAMERA. I DON;T CARRY MY PERSONAL STUFF TO THE SET. TO ME AT THAT POINT SAIF IS MY CO-STAR, THE CHARACTER WE ARE ESSAYING. WE ARE TOTALLY IN THAT MODE. AND WHEN WE ARE ON RESIL'S SET, HE CREATES THAT KIND OF ATMOSPHERE WHERE EVERYBODY BREAKS THE ICE AND WE BECOME THAT ROLE. WHEN YOU SEE THE FILM I'M SURE YOU WILL FEEL THAT.
Rajeev Masand: You are going to be shooting with Kajol soon for the Stepmom remake. You both worked together for Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gam, but there you were sisters. This time you are both going to be vying for the affection for one man or rather the kids. So it's going to be a clash between these two women?
KAREENA KAPOOR: KARAN HAS GIVEN ME A REALLY SPECIAL ROLE, WHICH JULIA ROBERTS ESSAYED. I LOVE JULIA ROBERTS AND THE ORIGINAL FILM. AND IT'S GREAT THAT IT'S NOT GOING TO BE A REMAKE BUT A COLLABORATION BETWEEN SONY AND DHARMA. SO, THE ORIGINAL PRODUCERS AND KARAN ARE COMING TOGETHER SO IT'S MORE LIKE THE INDIAN CINEMA TAKE ON STEPMOM. WORKING WITH KAJOL, FACING ANOTHER CHALLENGE, OUR CHEMISTRY WILL BE GREAT. I LOVE HER AS AN ACTRESS, I'VE ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO HER. I THINK WE WILL CREATE SOME MAGIC.
Rajeev Masand: Katrina and Deepika are grabbing opportunities to work with younger actors like Rabir and Imran or Neil and John. You seem quite content working with older actors like the Khans or Akshay and Ajay. Do you feel that is adding screen age to you?
KAREENA KAPOOR: I DO SCRIPTS ACCORDING TO THE ROLES. I CAN'T JUST DO A FILM WITH IMRAN BECAUSE I WAS OFFERED IT OR JOHN, NIEL OR SHAHID, THE YOUNGER GUYS. THERE HAS TO BE A VALID REASON FOR ME TO BE A PART OF THE FILM. OTHERWISE THERE IS NO POINT. I'M PRETTY CLEAR ON THAT. I'VE BEEN OFFERED ALOT OF FILMS WITH ALL THE NAMES THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED, BUT OF COURSE NOT WITH RANBIR. THOUGH I WOULDN'T WANT TO NAME THOSE FILMS, UNFORTUNATELY I DIDN’T WANT TO BE APART OF THOSE FILMS.
AND IN A FILM LIKE QURBAAN WHERE THERE IS SAIF ALI KHAN BUT WHERE THE GIRL HAS A PIVOTAL CHARACTER, IT TEMPTS ME TO SAY YES.
Rajeev Masand: What was the last film you saw that made you say I wish I was in this?
KAREENA KAPOOR: MAYBE IT WAS DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE THAT WAS MADE. EVERY BIG STAR OR ACTOR HAS TO GO THROUGH HIGHS AND LOWS, WHICH MAKES THE SUCCESS SWEETER. I'LL NEVER DISASSOCIATE MYSELF FROM ANY OF MY FILMS BUT I THINK I'VE BEEN FAIRLY LUCKY IN TERMS OF ROLES AND DIRECTORS.
Rajeev Masand: You have had some of the best
KAREENA KAPOOR: YES, TILL DATE, KARAN JOHAR AND RAJU HIRANI, WHAT MORE CAN I SAY. I DON'T KNOW IF I WILL EVER WANT TO ENVY SOMEONE AND SAY THAT I WISH I WERE IN THAT ROLE.
