Default SRK and Aamir lose National Award

    SRK, Aamir

No acting honours for the tireless entertainers but a special reward there is in the end. The superstars of Bollywood, Aamir and SRK, were in the race for the National Award for their acting talent but lost out to Tamil actor Prakash Raj for a Priyadarshan film Kanchivaram which Priyadarshan gladly took to the jury, but refuses to show to a local audience. The Tamil film, Kanchivaram, a period drama about poor silk weavers of the south, was chosen as the Best Movie at the 55th National Film Awards announced in New Delhi yesterday. SRK was nominated for Chak De! India, and Aamir for Taare Zameen Par, both subtle performances and both at a time when the volley of words slinging across their media battles was about to be decided as who is the reigning Khan.

This eventful news of them losing out can be seen as a blessing since none of the two could beat actor Prakash Raj, who has in the past won Best Supporting Actor award for his Iruvar in 1998 and also a special Jury Award in 2003. But there is still some reason to rejoice as the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De! India won the Best Overall Entertainment award, and Taare Zameen Par won the Best Family Welfare Entertainment award. However, what is most alarming is how the best film trophy went to a film that hasn’t even been shown to a local audience. The jury was headed by Sai Paranjpe; other members included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale.

About 102 films and 106 non-feature films were considered for the prestigious National Awards. When Priyadarshan held a press conference last year to talk about Kanchivaram which was then heading to Toronto Film Festival, his exact words were, ‘My latest Kanchivaram is a film that I made for myself and not for the audience.’ As if to mock the audience’s intelligence, we never got to see the film. Hope with this new honour he considers us worthy of taking a look at his fine tapestry of Kanchivaram, or else we’ll wait for De Dhana Dhan, where Katrina will shake her booty and remind us what we deserve.
