Uninor on expansion spree in Gujarat, eyes rural market
Telecom operator Uninor has added 321 additional network sites in rural Gujarat as part of its foray into rural markets of the state.
With this, the company said it now has 1,476 network sites in rural Gujarat spread across a population of 1.95 crore.
"Having reached our financial break-even in Gujarat, Uninor is now investing in its business in the state to take its services to small towns and villages," Uninor Chief Executive Yogesh Malik said. "We are now an established competitor in Gujarat. We have the ability to go deeper and wider into the rural territories; markets where basic services and affordability are relevant and our focus is on that now."
Without divulging the investment details, Malik said "Gujarat is Uninor's flagship circle after achieving the fastest break-even and are making the largest investment here.
The company launched its rural network expansion programme under the campaign "Gaam No Faydo, Uninor No Vaydo" (Benefits for villages, Uninor's promise).
"The company has now completed the first phase of rural network expansion with 321 new network sites in the rural markets," Malik said.
He said despite the fact that close to 22 per cent of company's revenues in the state are from rural markets, it has not shifted its focus from improving and consolidating its business in urban markets.
"Close to 22 per cent of our revenues in Gujarat come from rural markets. However, we have our focus on improving and consolidating our urban business," the CEO said.
The company is expanding its presence in rural markets by opening Uninor Express stores.
"Uninor Express stores, which provide comprehensive services to the company's subscribers, have been specially designed for rural areas and there are 170 such stores across the state
