No big names, no corporate involvement or funding, yet there is tremendous financial support from 22 cities in 17 countries for a series of five short films.

Now, a film funded by the people

Unusual, but entirely possible thanks to social networking websites and an out-of-the box idea of filmmaking.

Film director Onir created a group on Facebook to get support for the "I am" film series to spread social awareness through the visual medium and was overwhelmed by the response.

"We have already got 25 per cent of the monetary support through Facebook and we hope to get 25 per cent more. The rest 50 per cent, we will put in," Onir told adding that the music director for the film also came through Facebook.

"We have a budget of Rs 1.5 crore and I hope to launch at least five new actors through this initiative. The film will release early next year," said Onir who also directed 'My brother Nikhil'.

From Bangaloreans offering to host the film crew in their homes to a multi-millionaire offering Rs 10,000, actor Sanjay Suri, who features in two of the films, says he was touched by the generosity of some of the offers.
