[Tennis] Nadal, Ferrer reach Acapulco final
Rafael Nadal will meet David Ferrer in the Abierto Mexicano Telcel final after they recorded contrasting wins on Friday.
Continuing his comeback from a knee injury, Nadal overcame Spanish countryman Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-4 in their semi-final on the clay courts in Acapulco, Mexico.
Seeded second at the ATP 500 event, Nadal made the first break of the match in the 11th game on his way to taking the first set 7-5.
Both players had their opportunities in the second set, with Nadal taking advantage of one of his four break points to close out the win in one hour and 48 minutes.
Awaiting him in the final is three-time defending champion Ferrer, who was a 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 winner over Italian Fabio Fognini.
While the top seed converted five of eight break points, Fognini was wasteful – taking advantage of just two of his 12.
Ferrer has beaten Spaniards in the past three finals in Mexico and is on a 19-match winning streak at the event, but his record against Nadal makes for dreadful reading.
Nadal has won their past five meetings and 16 of their 20.
Defending champion Sara Errani eased into the women's final, thrashing Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-2 6-1.
The top seed took an hour and 25 minutes to advance, creating 19 break points and converting eight in a dominant display at the WTA International tournament.
Errani will face Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in the decider after the second seed was just as impressive in her win.
Suarez Navarro brushed past countrywoman Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 6-1.
