Saif’s love life inspires Imtiaz’s stories!
Simple, straight yet intense – that is not only how he likes to present his work, but that's exactly how 38-year-old director Imtiaz Ali is.
He always prefers to stay away from too much of limelight and says that he doesn’t believe in talking about himself, but he made an exception during his recent visit to Jaipur, and spoke about his kind of work and his kind of life, because by his own confession, he was sitting in one of his favourite places.
Imtiaz loves the Pink City so much that whenever he is here he looks forward to spending as much time as possible in the city.
“I just love doing simple things here, from roaming on the streets like a tourist to simply sitting on the marble floor of one of the monuments here and gazing at the architectural brilliance around. I just wish that I could get to spend a lot of time here to understand how the city still holds its traditions and values in this modern, fast changing environment,” says Imtiaz thoughtfully, and to spend that much of time here, the director says that he might even come up with a script with Jaipur as the backdrop. “Maybe then I will get to spend the amount of time that I want to spend here. It might be very soon that I will come to shoot in Jaipur, but I never plan anything specifically in my life, I just take things as and when they come,” shares Imtiaz, sounding like his character Geet from Jab We Met.
Imtiaz is all excited about his new film with actors Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, and when we ask him if the huge success of Jab We Met prompted him to do another love story in quick succession, he defends his new film by saying, “Let’s not call them just love stories, but stories that define relationships. And I really don’t understand it when people talk about different genres in films. I am a very simple person who just goes ahead with whatever idea that comes to my head. I consider myself an illiterate as far as cinema is concerned since it’s such a vast institution. But you can say that Saif’s personal life has inspired me to take more interest in love stories,” smiles Imtiaz.
Tell him that his fans expected him to cast Kareena with Saif in this new film and he takes a very clear stand saying, “I respect this thing called casting in films and believe that certain characters are created to be played by certain actors. I think only Deepika could do justice to the character in my film.” Only a few people know that besides writing and directing, Imtiaz has a passion for travelling and is a great foodie too. “I agree not many people know about it, because I hardly ever speak about it. My personal life is very different and I want to keep it personal. I think my films are the only things that should go public,” signs off Imtiaz.
