Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore may get Padma Awards
Bollywood's former superstar late Rajesh Khanna may get Padma Vibhushan this year as the list of the nominees of prestigious Padma Awards will be announced on Friday on the eve of the Republic Day.
Usually, the Padma awards are not conferred after the death of an individual, but Rajesh Khanna was considered by the government as highly deserving candidate for Padma Vibhushan. This would make an exception to the Padma Awards. Similar exceptions were made earlier when singer and music director Bhupen Hazarika was conferred with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2012.
Rajesh Khannna had never received Padma Award during his lifetime.
Beside Khanna, a high-level committee comprised of cabinet secretary Ajit Seth, home secretary R K Singh, scientist Anil Kakodkar, principal secretary to the PM Pulok Chatterjee as well as actor Ratna Pathak Shah has also shortlisted known personalities like actress Sharmila Tagore, Sholay's director Ramesh Sippy and singer Kailash Kher to honour this year. Awardees' names would be declared today after PM Manmohan Singh's approval.
The Sports Ministry has also recommended the names of wrestler Sushil Kumar and cricketer Rahul Dravid for the Padma Bhushan. Boxer Mary Kom is also recommended for the award.
