Irrfan's Republic Day connect
The Ministry of information and Broadcasting has commissioned the National Film Development Corporation Ltd (NFDC) to create a tableau which will be showcased on Republic Day to commemorate 100 years of cinema.
Sources say the tableau is referred to as 'Mayur Pankhi', and is a symbolic re-interpretation of the mythological flying bird-boat. It represents Indian cinema as a carrier of a nation's collective imagination; with gigantic celluloid sails suggesting how the vision of directors through the years has propelled the nation's imagination forward.
While the tableau will be moving on Rajpath, a one-minute audio track will accompany it. The voice-over for the audio track has been done by Irrfan. Irrfan told us, "I was approached 15 days back to record this and I immediately accepted it. It's a poem that talks about what Indian cinema has done for people; how it's not only a form of entertainment but an integral part of the lives of Indians all over the world." Sources tell us that the tableau's deck is divided in two parts - the first has portraits of SRK and Kajol dancing in mustard fields from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and the second part depicts two scenes from Pather Panchali and Mother India.
The tableau has made use of the silver colour which is symbolic of the silver screen, with names of landmark movies from across the country embedded on it.
