Beats, shoots & Delhi Bonds
We thought we'd walked into a shaadi, but we were assured we were bang in the middle of a film shoot scene.
It was a shaadi scene, there was a music stage, the dulha-dulhan stage, and people milling about. It was freezing cold - lekin mahaul garam tha. We heard the loud voices - Nila Madhab Panda, the director, was angry. "How can we get this late? What do you mean the artistes are not ready? I don't want this happening again!" The makeup was done, and we noticed the artistes - Sahil, Sumit, Preet Kamal, Anu, Erica - wearing lehenga and saris and shivering in the cold. It was an outdoor shoot, and though many angeethis had been placed here and there, the open farmhouse in Bijwasan was freezing in the night.
And then, Mika arrived - chilled out and cool, joking about, and ready to shoot. Nila told us, "This is a wedding scene, and the thought is how, in a Delhi wedding, everyone walks in thinking he is James Bond. So, the song is about the male ego, and what would actually happen if James Bond walked into a typical Punjabi wedding."
As if on cue, the choreographer asked for the song, a peppy number sung by Mika himself - and he got on the stage - and two firang babes also appeared by his side. Takes and retakes followed. It was around 1am now, and the shoot had started around 8pm. Mika was pretty cool with his part, and one round with him was quickly canned, but try as they all might, the firangs would just not look at Mika romantically and lip sync the song.
The choreographer Arvind, and Nila were tearing their hair apart, with Nila now and then shouting, "Koi toh unko naachna sikhao, yaar! Unko bolo Mika ko dekhein!"
