Saif, Soha & I are self-reliant: Sharmila
She is the ethereal beauty with fans across all age groups. And being the mother of two successful Bollywood stars hasn’t waned Sharmila
Tagore’s appeal in any ways.
If anything, she has in fact garnered even more young fans for both, her acting skills and for her famed beauty. The actor was recently seen on the big screen in Morning Walk. Talk to her about her role in the movie and the she describes it saying it was “A nice one that suits me well”.
Acting isn’t the only hat this talented and versatile lady wears. She also leads the Indian Film Censor Board and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. That apart, she is also a role model homemaker. And she juggles all these roles with much aplomb. Ask her how she manages her movie career alongside all this and she promptly says, “It’s not that easy. Last year was a very busy one for me. But frankly, I don’t want to act anymore. Whatever work I’ve done recently is either due to my Bengali connections or because the producer is well respected or because it was a new director and the script was good.” She also had a TV stint — she was judging a singing show — which she admits “got to be too much work”.
Sharmila’s career has spanned decades and she’s worked with a plethora of directors. Now, says the actress, she would prefer to work with the younger lot like Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Anurag Basu and the likes. “Just to be a part of their project would be nice,” she says. However, she laments the lack of good roles for actors of her age group in Hindi cinema. She says, “English cinema offers a lot of scope for adults. Here, however, it’s mostly restricted to the role of a mother or an aunt.”
Her children — Saif and Soha — are also well known actors in the industry. Talking about Saif and him turning producer with his soon-to-hit-screens offering Love Aaj Kal, Sharmila says, “I liked the movie. Saif is delectable as a sardar. The storyline is good and Imtiaz — who is a very good director — has done a fabulous job.” Meanwhile, veering to Soha’s filmi career, when asked whether she’d consider producing or directing a film for her daughter, the actress says, “Soha’s self reliant. Her film 99 fared quite well and we are now looking forward to the Bhatt film, Tum Mile, that she’s starring in. That apart, she’s now got her own TV show too. As a family of actors, we are all quite self reliant. We don’t indulge in these kind of gimmicks.”
