Pandit Ravi Shankar passes away
Noted sitar maestro Pt Ravi Shankar has expired. He died in a San Diego hospital at 4.30pm (Pacific time). He is survived by his wife Sukanya and daughters Anoushka and Norah Jones, who are also in the field of music.
The Indian embassy in the US confirmed the noted sitar player’s death with ambassador Nirupama Rao tweeting: “Pandit Ravi Shankar. Mourn passing of a musical genius and gentle soul. Attended his last concert Nov in Calif. He played with such passion.”
The 92-year old sitar exponent had been unwell for some time and had surgery in San Diego on 7 December.
Pt. Ravi Shankar was among India's best known contemporary musicians and had the honour of playing with international stars such as The Beatles. He received three Grammy awards and will be competing posthumously against daughter Anoushka Shankar, also a sitar player, for another Grammy in 2013.
Panditji received the Bharat Ratna in 1999. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1986 to 1992.
The sitar exponent was the younger brother of dancer Uday Shankar. He composed music for Satyajit Ray's famous Apu trilogy. He also wrote Western concert music for the sitar and orchestra, and performed with violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
