Lions reach final at Daredevils´ expense
The Highveld Lions are through to the Champions League T20 final after a 22-run win over the Delhi Daredevils in Durban on Thursday.
Defending 140 at Kingsmead, the Lions outclassed the Indian Premier League team in convincing fashion in the first semi-final.
Lions' Sohail Tanvir (1-22) jolted the Daredevils early to dismiss Virender Sehwag for a duck on the third ball of the chase.
Daredevils opener David Warner (21 off 18) smacked four boundaries before he fell to Chris Morris (2-7) in the sixth over.
Only Kevin Pietersen (50 off 44 balls) managed to hold on to his end as the Daredevils' middle-order, consisting of Unmukt Chand (nine), Irfan Pathan (one) and Ross Taylor (one) failed to trouble the scorers.
Aaron Phangiso (2-18), Jean Symes (1-22) and Dwaine Pretorius (1-10) impressed with the ball as the Daredevils were staring at an uphill task at 76-5.
Needing 46 off 18 deliveries, Morne Morkel (18) got runs under his belt with a four and a six.
Ajit Agarkar (two) failed to offer assistance as he fell to Dirk Nannes (2-34) in the penultimate over, with the Lions restricting Delhi to 117-9 and booking their spot in the final.
Asked to bat first, the Lions got off to a good start, with Gulam Bodi (50 off 49 balls) and Alviro Petersen (24 off 19 balls) getting runs on the board.
Umesh Yadav (2-20) struck to dismiss Petersen in the fifth over before Agarkar (1-28) and Pawan Negi (1-21) got the better of Quinton de Kock (11) and Pretorius (three) to dent the middle order.
At 63-3, Bodi and Neil McKenzie (46 off 28) took on the Delhi bowling attack and steadied the innings with a 59-run stand for fourth wicket.
Yadav dismissed Bodi in the 18th over, but the partnership ensured the Lions got to a challenging total.
