Imtiaz demands his personal space
Imtiaz Ali with his long, curly locks and the Prince from Hans Christian Andersenís fairytale looks, goes unnoticed when he enters a Mumbai suburban restaurant for this interview.
And, he is happy about it. Practically a recluse, he detests being the centre of attention. His Jab We Met unanimously wowed audiences and won accolades for Kareena Kapoor, yet the director who is ready with his next, Love Aaj Kal, is edgy

Are you nervous?
Yes and no. Iíve been mixing for the last 10 hours, and seeing my film I felt perhaps this could be better, that could be different. Iím a technician who doesnít believe that my work is perfect. There is always something more to be achieved.
After the euphoria around Jab We Met does Bollywood expect miracles out of you?
Do they? I donít know. Iíve hardly interacted with anyone other than my immediate cast and crew. Iím happy that JWM worked, but I donít dwell on these things too much. All I wish to do is make my film with conviction and then await the audienceís reaction. I donít know what the industry expects of me because I havenít interacted much with the media nor have I been in regular touch with the industry. Post JWM, Iíve spent most of my time in private spaces ó writing my next film, and then shooting it.
Surely something must have changed after JWM?
Yes, now I will get a chance to make more movies, and make them in the way I believe they should be made. However, I still want my anonymity... I want my personal freedom.
A source says that you held Shahid Kapoorís hand when he broke up with Kareena Kapoor?
I was never a confidant in the Shahid-Kareena relationship. Though they were my lead actors, they didnít discuss their life with me. It is sheer coincidence that Shahid and I were in a hotel room in Ahmedabad promoting JWM, when he got the news that Kareena had moved on. When the news broke, itís not as if I sat him down and gave him some pep-talk. I just gave him a smile, a hug and then I let him be. Iím a private person, and I respect other peopleís privacy.
Were Saif and Deepika the ideal players for the lead role in your next?
Yes, Saif fits the role of Jai to the ĎTí. As for Deepika, she has a perceptive warm silence about her that I find very intriguing. To me, she was Meera from day one.
Whatís next for you?
Well Iíll start writing again...
