Kohli always confident of victory
India batsman Virat Kohli says he was never worried his side would lose their ICC World Twenty20 opener against Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Kohli made 50 from 39 deliveries as India posted a score of 159-5 off their 20 overs but Afghanistan were 100-5 with five overs left and had an outside chance of winning.
That was snuffed out thanks to some handy late bowling from Lakshmipathy Balaji (3-19 off 3.3 overs) as Afghanistan were bowled out for 136.
The result was closer than India would have liked but Kohli said afterwards that his confidence in his team never wavered.
"A few situations didn't go according to plan and that was a bit disturbing but I didn't think at any point we would lose the game," Kohli said.
"To get a decent score on the board you don't need to go all guns blazing in every game, especially against a side like Afghanistan who have nothing to lose, you have to be more careful, and see to it that the team wins.
"They had nothing to lose, they were just going out there and expressing themselves, expecting not too much out of what they were doing. That way more or less you tend to do the right things and things go your way.
"So when the batsmen came out slogging, the ball was flying to the boundaries and not where the fielders were placed and those sort of things can happen.
"You need to stay calm in those tricky situations but there were a few tense moments out there. We could have won by a bigger margin and we could have done a bit better in our bowling."
India will look to improve on their bowling before facing England in Colombo on Sunday.
