Soni Razdan mulls film on 1959's Nanavati case
Soni Razdan is mulling with the idea of making a film on the 1959 K M Nanavati case. The case still remains one of the most talked-about criminal cases in Mumbai. The Kawas Maneckshaw Nanavati vs The State of Maharashtra case falls in the category of killing for love.
Needless to say, this was a case that drew a lot of media attention and hogged the headlines for a long period. Initially, Nanavati was declared not guilty by the jury. However, later the verdict was dismissed by the Bombay High Court and the case was re-tried. This case was the last to be tried by a jury in India. As a result of the case, jury trials were abolished by the government.
The intriguing murder case later caught the fancy of many book writers and filmmakers. It was Sunil Dutt, who finally made a film on the story titled Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke that featured Leela Naidu (Neena A. Sahni) and Rehman (Ashok Srivastava) beside him, who played Anilkumar G. Sahni (Nanavati), Ashok Kumar among others.
It is learnt that, in an effort to strengthen her script, Soni has been meeting top lawyer Ram Jethmalani in Delhi to understand the intricacies of the case as it was the noted lawyer who had led the prosecution.
When asked to confirm about her film, she said, “We haven't taken a call yet. I cannot reveal anything else at the moment.”
