Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Yash Raj's tryst with musical titles continues with Shah Rukh Khan's nextThe 80-year-old Yash Copra has kept alive Yash Raj Films' tradition of using song lyrics as titles of the Hindi films it produces and distributes by naming its latest 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', the amazingly popular but despairing dance number starring Hema Malini in 'Sholay'.
The film title was announced on Tuesday to mixed reaction from people on social networking sites. Some thought it was quaint and dated, while the lovers of Hindi film songs of the 60s and 70s and Shah Rukh Khan (who plays the lead protagonist in the film) fans felt it's a great name for a timeless romantic film - the forte of the Yash Raj house.
Malini popularized the number "Jab tak hai jaan, jaane jahaan, main naachoongi". The story goes, when Sholay's notorious dacoit Gabbar Singh captured Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), he told Basanti (Malini) "Jab tak tere paaon challenge, uski sans chalegi." Malini danced bare feet on a bed of broken glass to the jazzy RD Burman number to save the lives
of her companion and his best friend.
