Remembering Rajesh Khanna
Jatin Khanna, in the begining of his career, was referred to as 'faaltu hero' because of his facial features, his eyes in particular, which were not liked by the aesthetes of the time. His flop debut, 'Aakhri Khat' (1966), seemed to prove that he was indeed not made for the screen. Cineastes and movie buffs were getting ready to write him off when, in 1969, a storm hit Bombay and proceeded to annihilate and redefine all established norms of superstardom: Cyclone Rajesh Khanna had arrived! In the three years that followed, till the advent of the super storm by the name Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna reigned over the Indian screen like a god and seemed to be perfectly invincible.
Born Jatin Khanna on December 29, 1942, in Amritsar, Rajesh was raised by adopted parents (relatives of his biological parents) since they were childless.
Jatin had a childhood friend, Ravi Kapoor; they both studied in the same school and the same college. Ravi Kapoor is the Jeetendra of today and Jatin became Rajesh Khanna.
After winning an All India Talent Contest, Rajesh Khanna made his movie debut with 'Aakhri Khat', a flop. Then came 'Raaz', which also was a B. O. dud.
It was 'Aradhana' (1969) that catapulted Rajesh Khanna to instant national fame; he became 'the first superstar of India'. Post 'Aradhana', Rajesh Khanna delivered super hits such as 'Anand', 'Aap Ki Kasam','Haathi Mere Saathi','Mere Jeevan Saathi', 'Amar Prem' and 'Namak Haraam'.
At the height of his career, Rajesh Khanna would be mobbed and kissed at public functions, and is said to have received love letters written in blood. In 1973, Khanna married Dimple Kapadia (they separated in 1984).
Rajesh Khanna did his trademark romantic character in many social melodramas of the time, often appearing with actresses such as Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Hema Malini and Tina Munim. In the eighties, he formed popular on-screen pairs with Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Poonam Dhillon.
Music was one of the biggest components of Rajesh Khanna starrers; most scores were composed by S.D.Burman, R.D. Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
The Rajesh Khanna-Kishore Kumar-R. D. Burman combo produced several hits such as 'Amar Prem', 'Apna Desh', 'Mere Jeevan Saathi', 'Aap Ki Kasam', 'Kati Patang', 'Namak Haraam', 'Awaaz', 'Aanchal', 'Hum Dono' and 'Alag Alag'.
Rajesh Khanna registered 15 consecutive hits between 1969 and 1973, which is a standing record in Indian film history.
Rajesh Khanna's reign was cut short in 1973, when Amitabh Bachchan arrived with the thundering superhit, 'Zanjeer'. During the Big B's reign, Khanna could not retain his magical touch, and suffered a string of box office flops such as 'Mehbooba' ,'Naukri' and 'Janata Havaldar'.
Khanna's downfall has mostly been attributed to his post-stardom complacency in addition to the changing trend (from romantic movies to action-oriented multi-starrers) in the late-1970s.
In the eighties, Khanna starred in critically acclaimed box office hits such as 'Amardeep', 'Bandish', 'Thodisi Bewafaii', 'Dard', 'Avtaar', 'Agar Tum Na Hote', 'Souten' ,'Awaaz', 'Nazrana', 'Angaarey' and 'Amrit'.During the multi-starrer era (1975-1990), Khanna delivered three superhits with childhood friend Jeetendra: 'Dharam Kanta','Nishaan' and 'Maqsad'. He turned producer with 'Alag Alag' (1985)
Khanna entered politics and joined Congress; he won the 1991 elections from New Delhi and served as a Member of Parliament from 1991 to 1996. Though he did a few movies in nineties, none of them complemented his superstar status.
In 2001-2002, Rajesh played major roles in two television serials: 'Apne Parai' (B4U & DD Metro) and 'Ittefaq' (Zee TV). Khanna shocked his fans when he appeared in a steamy bedroom scene in 'Wafaa A Deadly Love Story' (2008).
Rajesh Khanna was last seen in a TV ad for Havells fans. Please add reputation points if you like the post. This encourages us. Simply click star mark on left of this post then ADD to Reputation, thats it
