Shanghai washed out by Rowdy Rathore wave!
Contrary to trade speculation, not only did Shanghai which released last Friday fail to check Rowdy Rathore’s second week bull-run at the box-office, but it got totally swamped by Akshay Kumar’s return to action. And Rowdy Rathore continued to remain a crowd puller and money spinner for its makers.
Trade analyst Kumar Mohan of Complete Cinema believes today’s audience is more interested in watching masala films than a political saga. “Shanghai is an average film. Enough buzz was not created for it. Even though it has talented actors like Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol, people didn’t go to watch the film. It got an opening of 30%. The audience wants entertainment. Hence, Rowdy Rathore is doing very well at the box office,” said Mohan.
Trade pandit Komal Nahta feels that Shanghai is not every cinegoer’s cup of tea. “The collections of Shanghai are not good. The film is meant for a niche audience. On Friday the collection was 3.10 crore, on Saturday it went upto 4 crore, while on Sunday it was 5 crore. There is definitely a rise in the collections, but on the lower side,” explained Nahta. “Don’t expect much of a rise in the collections of Shanghai in the second week. On the other hand, Rowdy Rathore is doing well and, in fact, the collections were double in the second week.”
Renowned film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Shanghai collected approx Rs 12.10 cr + nett in its opening weekend. Breakup: Fri 3.35 cr, Sat 4.25 cr, Sun 4.5 cr +. Disappointing! Rowdy Rathore has crossed the Rs 100 cr nett mark at the end of its second week. Has performed exceptionally well at single screens as well as plexes.”...being a human...
