Default Subhash Ghai advocates tough laws to curb film piracy

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai feels that the menace of piracy, which results in the loss of revenue to the movie producers, has become an accepted part of social business as there is no stringent legislation to contain it.

"It is a dangerous situation. What can law do when pirated films are being watched by one and all," the filmmaker told PTI.

Ghai, who is known for making films like 'Hero' 'Khalnayak', 'Ram Lakhan', 'Taal' and 'Pardes', said checking the menace of piracy has never been a priority on the government agenda.

"It took us 15 years to make the authorities understand the seriousness of piracy. In the last decade, the menace was acknowledged as a serious issue but, nobody has been able to find a solution," he said.

According to Ghai, the existing laws are full of lacunae and pirates can get away with it.

"Even pirates don't realise they are committing a theft. They feel no harm can come to them. We need a legislation with stringent provisions to come down heavily on pirates," he said adding that piracy should be treated on par with drug trafficking.

"Strict implementation of even moderate laws is better than no implementation of strong laws. Society at large needs to treat piracy as an evil act," he said.
