Imran Khan in Maamu Aamir’s footsteps
Imran Khan is quite done with rom-coms. And, like perfectionist Maamu Aamir Khan, he’s now into films that require deep preparation. And the preparation is getting deeper by the film. After Vishal Bharadwaj’s Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, which is fictional and needed just facial growth from the actor, Imran gets into Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 where he’s playing a real-life gangster. But the toughest challenge yet for the young actor is
going to be Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Milan Talkies which Imram will start at the end of the year.
In the film, Imran will play a Malegaon filmmaker of blockbuster spinoffs. Malegoan is a small town in Maharashtra which has a thriving film industry called Mollywood that makes wannabe blockbusters by ripping off Bollywood’s biggest hits. The Canada Broadcasting Corporation brought Mollywood out to the world in a documentary called Indian Reborn that showed how, despite the lack of technological savoir faire and by using local heroes, Mollywood produced remakes like Malegaon ke Sholay and Malegaon ki Lagaan.
Dhulia intends to shoot his Milan Talkies in Lucknow but is sending Imran to Malegaon to understand the culture of duplicating blockbusters. Imran is looking at the year-end to get into the skin of the role. Dhulia is happy to see Imran pushing the envelope after a string of conventional rom-coms. The director said, “We’ve come to a situation where our leading men don’t want to do conventional films any more. In fact, the unconventional has now become the conventional.”...being a human...
