How actors are handling the recession
In the first half of the recession story, we spoke about how the current global economic meltdown is affecting the fate of Bollywood actresses. The current situation is made worse by the indefinite strike against multiplexes.
Now we turn to the actors to see how they're tackling with the financial crisis.
Even after a string of flops, Akshay seems to be flushed with money. The actor who recently was the highest tax payer in Bollywood, also has a few films lined up.
First up, there's Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan opposite lucky mascot Katrina Kaif. The shooting for this movie is still going on.
Akshay also has Vipul Shah's Action replay opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, which is based on a Gujarati play of the same name.
Then there is Kambhakkht Ishq opposite Kareena Kapoor and a host of Hollywood stars including Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards, and Blue, another multistarrer starring Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta.
Sajid Khan's Houseful has been announced and is in pre-production. Besides, the actor has Amit Kapoor's long pending Hello India which got stalled when the lead actress, Namrata Shirodkar, got married. The film was started last year again, this time with Udita Goswami in the lead.
After Akshay, the actor who has maximum movies in hand is John.
Among the ones ready for release are Kabir Khan's New York, Nagesh Kuknoor's Aashayein and Ali Baba And The 40 Thieves Ali Baba, an animation film.
John is currently shooting for David Dhavan's Hook Ya Crook which also stars Genelia D' Souza, Shreyas Talpade and Kay Kay Menon, as well as Deven Khote's Film City where he plays himself. Film City is a light hearted story about a chawl which is located next to film city.
John is also co-producing Abbas Tyerwala's next titled 1-800-Love. The movie which is penned by Abbas's wife Paki is still in the pre-production stage.
Shah Rukh Khan
Now, this one here doesn't look like he's affected by the recession.
Apart from his IPL committments and his own production company Red Chillies, the actor is also looking forward to his forthcoming movies like My Name Is Khan, Dulha Mil Gaya, Ra One, Happy New Year and Roshan Abbas' next.
Karan Johar's My name is Khan stars his best on-screen partner till date, Kajol. This film is based on the 9/11 attacks.
Mudassar Aziz's long pending romantic comedy Dulha Mil Gaya [it took a lot of time to shoot because of SRK's ill health] opposite Sushmita Sen is in pre-production.
Anubhav Sinha's Ra 1 is a super hero film in the post-production stages. It is written by Hollywood writer Benullo and will have lots of special effects.
Farah Khan's Happy New Year has just been announced. SRK is also supposed to produce a film for Roshan Abbas and there are rumours that he may also act in it.
Salman has four films in hand out of which three are completed and ready for release.
First up is Prabhu Deva's Wanted, a remake of the Telugu film Pokkiri starring Ayesha Takia Azmi and Mahesh Manjrekar.
Then there is Main Aur Mrs Khanna, a family drama starring Kareena Kapoor, and London Dreams opposite Asin.
Anil Sharma's Veer has been scripted by Salman Khan. The film has gone on floors but got stalled several times.
He may just be two-films old, but the actor has producers making a beeline for him.
He has four films in hand out of which two -- Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Khani and Prakash Jha's Rajniti -- are opposite Katrina Kaif.
The other two are Kajol's cousin's Ayaan Mukherji's film Wake Up Sid opposite Konkana Sen Sharma, and Siddhart Anand's next romantic comedy opposite Priyanka Chopra.
Not to be outdone, Amitabh too has four films in his kitty. Two are completed while the other two are on floors.
The completed films include Leena Yadav's Teen Patti which also stars Hollywood actor Ben Kingsley, and Sujoy Ghosh's Alladin, a fantasy story.
Amitabh is currently shooting for R Balakrishnan's Pa starring son Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan. Pa is a comedy about a father and son relationship.
Bachchan is also doing Ram Gopal Varma's 24X7, the shooting for which started this month. Amitabh plays the owner of a news channel.
Saif Ali Khan
Another actor who doesn't seem to be hit by the recession is Saif who turns producer with two films -- Love Aaj Kal [ready for release] and Agent Vinod opposite Kareena Kapoor [shooting underway].
Saif is also doing Rensil D'silva's Jehad opposite Kareena.
Last year Abhishek had a big hit, Dostana to his credit. Currently he is shooting for Mani Ratnam's Raavan along with wife Aishwarya.
He is also shooting for R Balakrishnan's Pa along with dad Amitabh as well as Abhinay Deo's Crooked opposite his wife.
Neil Nitin Mukesh
After a great performance in Johnny Gaddar everyone hoped that Neil's Aa Dekhen Zara would be a hit too. Alas, the film bombed.
But that doesn't seem to affect the young actor and his prospects, which are looking good.
Neil has three films in his kitty -- Sudhir Mishra's Tera Kya Hoga Johnny starring Soha Ali; Kabir Khan's New York starring Katrina Kaif and John Abraham; and Madhu Bhndarkar's Jail starring Mugdha Godhse.
Now, here's an actor who is following in Aamir Khan's footsteps of doing a film at a time.
His latest is his father's upcoming film, Kites starring Kangna Ranaunt and Barbara Mori. Shooting is currently going on.
Hrithik is also doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next opposite Aishwarya Rai.
After Kidnap flopped, Imran seems to be lying low. Right now the actor is looking at scripts before signing them.
However, he has two films ready for release. One is Abhinay Deo's Delhi Belly, a sexy comedy produced by his mammu Aamir Khan, while the other is Soham Shah's action thriller Luck starring Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Ravi Kissen and Danny Denzongpa
Recession or not, Aamir shoots one film at a time.
Currently he is shooting for Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots starring Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani. The movie is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's book Five Point Someone.
Aamir has also signed Neeraj Vora next. The film will go on floors next year. Aamir is also producing the film.
