John scores for football
John Abraham is truly passionate about football.
For quite some time now, John has been trying to do his bit for the sport, and was even thinking on the lines of starting a football academy. But now, as the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, is unwell, John has decided to pitch in by doing his bit. He is getting together with two of our country’s leading footballers
Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chetri, to ensure that “the game gets its due.”
John says, “Baichung and Chetri are football buddies. We have the same goal, when it comes to the interest of the game. So we’re onto planning something major.” President of The AIFF since 1988, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is now seriously ill, and this is where John steps in. “With him in a coma, I’m seriously lost on how to go about promoting football. But yes, I definitely won’t allow the game to suffer. As an ambassador for football, I’m doing my best to carry the game forward,” John says.
The fact that drew John towards Sooni Taraporewala’s Little Zizou earlier this year was that football played an important part in the film. “It was a sweet film about a little boy’s love for the game apart from being about Parsis. You know I’m a half bawa,” explains John. While Dhan Dhana Dhan — Goal was a film totally dedicated to football, a more realistic film is now on the anvil, and John says he wouldn’t mind producing it.
Setting the right example is high on John’s list of priorities. “My fans see me as the guy from outside who made it big in Bollywood without a godfather. I connect with the middle-class audiences. They see me as one of them. I plan to do as much as possible to stay connected. And football is a very middleclass game,” he says.
