Producers meet PM
PM Manmohan Singh might be a very busy man, but he found time to meet producers from Bollywood and listen to their version in their tussle with
Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan invited Mukesh Bhatt, Manmohan Shetty, Subhash Ghai and Ratan Jain to meet the PM in Mumbai recently.
“It was an opportunity to tell him everything in detail, and he gave us a patient hearing,” says Bhatt. “We told him the problem is not just about revenue sharing. We explained to him that in the 90s, with the advent of private TV channels, home video, etc, people stopped going to theatres to watch movies. This created a big problem for the film industry then. So we’d approached the government and they came out with tax holidays. This enabled the multiplexes to flourish, but we got no benefit from them,” says Bhatt.
Though the producers know that nothing much, probably, will come from discussing the subject with the PM at this point, they say they respect the fact that he heard what they had to say. “He told us that he was glad that we spoke about the entire thing. Because of campaigning and elections, he won’t be able to do anything right now. But he’s promised that if he comes to power again, he’ll look into this matter. But if his party does not come to power, we’ll approach the one that does,” says Bhatt.
