Biography: Rani Mukherjee
It's an industry of off-springs of former stars, but Rani Mukherjee has a filmy lineage that few can match. Her father, Ram Mukherjee, was a film director and the owner of Filmalaya Studios. Her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, was a playback singer. Her aunt, Debashree Roy was a Bengali film actress and her cousin Kajol needs no introduction. In other words, Rani was meant to be in the movie business.
Rani began her movie career in 1996 with the film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat where she played a rape victim. The film received critical acclaim but bombed at the Box Office, which lead Rani to temporarily quit films and go back to finish her studies.
Rani came back to Bollywood 1998 and starred opposite Aamir Khan in Ghulam. That was also the year she acted alongside SRK and Kajol in the superhit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for which she received a Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
There was just no looking back for Rani from that point on and she has since acted in a great variety of films. She has done straightout comedies like Hadh Kar Di Aapne and Hello Brother and serious films The Rising and Hey Ram.
One of Rani's most memorable roles was in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black where she played a blind girl to perfection. She is among those actresses who has gathered praises from the popular as well as the critical sections of movie-goers.
Rani has six Filmfare awards to her name as well as a whole host of other awards.
Rani manages to keep her personal life to herself and has always denied linkups with any Bollywood personality. She was however, reportedly having an affair with Abhishek Bachchan and later with the scion of Yash Raj - Aditya Chopra. She has never publicly admitted to any of these relationships, but it is widely known that Aditya Chopra's mother does not approve of their relationship, as her loyalties lie with Aditya's estranged wife.
