Are Indian TV Audience Still Gender biased? In times when girls & boys both are proving their mettle, the Indian mentality that male child is superior doesn’t seem to wither away. The latest event that adds more fume to this thought is that the finalist of two reality shows are only boys.
Star Plus’ Just Dance (Dance competition) & Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs (singing competition) have recently got their four finalists both of which include only boys. Sad part is that the girl contestants which remained (read Rimsha Deb in Lil Champs & Soumita Roy Choudhury in Just Dance) made it to the top five & were evicted just recently. Having made it to the top five, proves their talent & it also proves that Indian audiences still live in their age old believes that boys are superior & have no respect for talent.
While Lil champs results are based on public voting & Just Dance results are based on the judges’ view, both the shows have been decreasing the number of female participants right from the start.
Just Dance started with top 13 contestants of which only five were girls. Lil champ on the other hand had the same number (read nine) of girls & boys, in its top 18 contestants, as that is the format of the show. Knowing that only a boy would win these two titles, we can’t understand how long it will take the Indian audiences to become free from gender bias & instead respect genuine talent. We hope that it happens sometime soon, because if not, we are bound to suffer great loss of talent. Keeping our fingers crossed....being a human...
