India’s Superman passes awayShaikh Shafique, the lead actor of Sunil Bohra and Anurag Kashyap's Malegaon Ka Superrman, died after the film’s screening
It was as if Shaikh was just waiting to see himself on-screen before saying goodbye forever. Shaikh couldn't move and so his bed had to be brought into the theatre to watch the film," explained Sunil Bohra about the passing of 28-year old Shaikh Shafique, the leading man of the Superman spoof Malegaon Ka Superrman.
Shafique, who suffered from throat cancer, passed away a couple of hours after the screening of the small budget film that producers Anurag Kashyap and Sunil Bohra organised for the actor and his family and friends.
Bohra informed Mumbai Mirror, "He was barely able to raise his hand to acknowledge us. Shaikh was very engrossed in the film. We knew Shaikh was dying. So despite piracy concerns, we decided to screen the film for Shaikh and his family and friends. We don't care about the film being pirated. We're happy it made Shaikh happy."
The very special farewell screening of Malegoan Ka Superrman was held at Central Talkies in Malegoan on Tuesday night. And then on Wednesday morning, Bohra was informed by director Shaikh Nasir about the actor's death.
Bohra added, "When I saw him smiling during the screening, I thought Shaikh would live a little longer. How were we to know that his end was so near? At least he died a hero's death. The theatre was packed."
Ironically, Shaikh, who could not speak because he was battling throat cancer, was shown fighting the tobacco mafia in the film. The debutant actor Shaikh worked in a cloth factory to earn a living for his family. He is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
