Social media use by adults keeps climbing
A new report by the Pew Research Center found that use of social media websites by adults continues to climb, with the number of U.S. adults that use social networking websites increasing from 61 percent one year ago to 65 percent today, and this is compared to just 5 percent in 2005.
The report by Pew was based on telephone interviews carried out by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. Young people are still by comprise the biggest portion of social media users today at 83 percent, but most of the increase in social networking use comes from people over the age of 30 and of this groups, most of the increase comes from older folks. A year ago 26 percent of those over the age of 65 used social networking website; this ratio has now increased to one third.
Social networking use by adult internet users between the ages of 50 and 64 increased from 20 percent to 32 percent. 43 percent of adults in the survey reported that on a typical day they surfed to websites like Twitter and Facebook, up from 32 percent last year.
