2012 Mercedes Benz E 63 AMG | new car review
The Big brash Daddy of German sports saloons is back wearing the same badge but with bigger bulge. Rumour has it that AMG had to slide a crowbar into the engine bay to get that Monster 6.2-litre V8 motor out. It is now packed it with the all new AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, shared with the CLS 63 AMG launched earlier. This Torque tank is capable of producing 525bhp and 700Nm torque, available between 1750 and 5000rpm. Still greedy for more kick in the rear, the available AMG Performance package ups output to 557 horses and 800 Nm torque, available from 2000 to 4500 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h comes in a brisk 4.3 and 4.2 seconds respectively and top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h. Spoiler alert! We are not talking E 63 AMG Estate although it too will be available in Q4 of 2011, because we donít have many Demon Veloce possessed soccer moms here in Arabia. Also it may seem sacrilegious to mention AMG and fuel economy in the same paragraph, but here you goÖ9.8l/100km i.e. 2.8l/100km better than the 6.2-litre V8. This is either an April foolís prank played too late in the year or simply they are doing a brilliant job. Even CO2 emissions are a lowly 230gms/km.
The E 63 gets AMGís homebred SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and the electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering system. Speaking of ex-factory extras, thereís a whole bunch, all with the AMG suffix. Yes there is that AMG RIDE CONTROL for those long trips to Musandam with your folks. Then there is Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. But when youíre driving that fast you better see where you are headed. Letís hope your not tomorrows news! AMG have not forgotten to pretty up the E Class either. The AMG Performance pack adds a carbon fiber trim inside and out with piano lacquer, then there is the AMG Performance steering wheel with black Alcantara in the grip area, illuminated AMG door sills, red-painted brake callipers and a carbon fibre AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid, carbon fibre engine cover, an electric rear window blind and titanium grey 10-spoke alloy wheels. Get the optional driverís package a.k.a. go faster package and see a true 300 km/h on the speedo.
We have a quibble with AMG though. They keep referring to the last-gen 6208cc engine as a 6.3-litre when in reality itís a 6.2-litre engine.
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG will be available in the Middle East as Saloon and Estate variants with GCC pricing starting at USD119,450 i.e. AED438,400. Thank you AMG for introducing a new kind of infidelity to men. We can now sneak out just for the drives.
