Samir Chanda's death sends Joker in a tizzy
Acclaimed art director Samir Chanda is no more. He died yesterday of a heart attack which is said to have occurred due to a medicine gone wrong. Supposedly he was also going through a phase of severe depression due to issues in his personal life.
Says a close associate, "Off late Samir wasn't himself. Though he has been a thorough professional right through 25 odd years that he worked as an art director with some of the biggest Bollywood filmmakers, he wasn't at peace with himself during last few months."
This was felt by Shirish Kunder and his production team as well during their stint together in Joker. This fantasy flick with an element of sci-fi was one of the select few projects that Chanda had hand picked this year. Since the film allowed him to run his imagination wild and do something totally out of ordinary while creating a new world, Chanda was doing some of his best work on the Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer.
"That's right", says a crew member from Joker. What he has done in the film is phenomenal. He made a set worth 3 crores during Chandigarh schedule of the film. It had turned out so well that Akshay couldn't believe it was a set. Then later when everyone was contemplating further to shoot in a real forest or not, he further exceeded expectations of all by making an exact replica in a Mumbai location. He really was a master in his game and knew how to fuse real and imaginary world."
However there is a battle that Joker has to encounter for the remaining shoot of the film. Since there are massive sets and other interiors that are yet to be put up for the film, Shirish and his team are in a fix to find a man to do the job.
"This is not a regular film where you can get hold of any other art director and make him complete the film. Joker requires a certain vision for itself and till the time director as well his team of art director, cinematographer, sound designer etc. are not on the same page, it only becomes difficult. Since next schedule of Joker begins in September, it is going to be a challenge for Shirish."
Reeling under shock, Shirish put up a 'No Comments' stance and texted back stating, "It is too early to take any decisions. This is a great personal and professional loss."
