Sonam is happy to be experimenting
Last year it was Deepika Padukone who had an eventful year with as many as five of her films releasing one after another. Now the same could well hold true for Sonam Kapoor who started it all with Thank You but would also be seen in Mausam and Players before the end of year. She is happy though that at the least she is changing genres with each of these films and experimenting with her performance and look.
"It has been a deliberate decision on part of Sonam to jump across genres with each of her films. She doesn't want to get typecast in those quintessential boy-meets-girl love stories. If that was the case, she wouldn't have started off with unconventional films like Saawariya and Delhi 6 where she didn't even get a chance to get into a chic avtar, something which she knows she can carry off very well both on and off the screen", says a friend of Sonam who has been a steady companion through her Bollywood journey.
Sonam did have things looking up for her last year with I Hate Luv Storys and Aisha where she was seen in a glam avtar.
"While I Hate Luv Storys was still safe, she took a different route with Aisha which was a costume oriented chic-flick, a genre that was never explored in Bollywood before", a casting director adds, "Of course there were varied reactions but Sonam was sure that she didn't want to take the traditional route. This is the reason why she chose a comedy (Thank You), love story (Mausam) and an action thriller (Players) as her next three films, all of which belong to different genres and allow her to enter a different space."
No wonder, it is turning out to be the moment of reckoning for Sonam who would be looking at her forthcoming films hitting the bull's eye, hence bringing her on a higher stage when it comes to the standing of leading ladies in Bollywood.
"Yes, I have been experimenting because I don't want to get typecast", says Sonam with a straight face instead of making clichéd excuses around 'I pick the best that comes my way', "I am doing a performance oriented Mausam as well as playing a tom boy character in Players because I want to show people that I can do different things in different genres."
She is happy to have spaced out these films well and feels that she is moving ahead in a right direction.
"Doesn't the success of I Hate Luv Storys prove that? And I am told that Thank You too sailed through", she says, "If you want I can be a Delhi socialite or a housewife. Tomorrow I would be seen as a Punjabi belle and then later as this hot girl. I feel I can do everything; now I am just striving to better it all with every movie."
