Default Baba Ramdev was hiding in a sari: Union home secretary

Baba Ramdev was hiding in a sari of his female devotees when we arrested him at 4.15 am," said Union Home Secretary G K Plillai while talking to desirulez reporter. He said the Baba was on his way to his ahram in Haridwar in police custody, and he is calm and is cooperating (with the authorities).

Pillai added that he is expected to reach Haridwar by noon.

Pillai said, "When we told him that he doesn't have permission to hold the fast on the grounds and we showed him the papers for his externment orders, he was uncooperative. He asked for some time and then jumped off the stage to hide in the crowd."

Pillai refused to accept the charge that the government used excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. He said, "How can you say that? We didn't open fire. No one has died. Only four injuries have been noted so far."

Pillai added, "We haven't at all used excessive force to evacuate the 20,000-strong crowd."

He said New Delhi was calm and a police force has been deployed to tackle any possible emergency.

Default Ramdev arrest: The prime minister should act now

The ham-handed handling of Baba Ramdev's movement against foreign bank accounts of Indian nationals by the government does not speak well either of the government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or of the Congress headed by Sonia Gandhi , or of the senior bureaucracy advising the PM.

Public anger against the perceived lack of action by the government to detect and proceed legally against the holders of illegal accounts abroad had been building up at least for a year, if not longer. This anger was more faithfully and accurately reflected in the internet than in the print and electronic media.

While the electronic media played a commendable role in reflecting public anger over the foot-dragging by the government in taking action on charges of corruption against certain political leaders, it did not take serious note of the internet anger over government's perceived inaction against illegal accounts held abroad by Indian nationals.

Default Baba's arrest was 'barbaric': BJP

Reacting sharply to Sunday's early morning arrest of Baba Ramdev from Ramlila grounds in New Delhi , Bhartiya Janata Party spokesman Prakash Javadekar condemned the government's move and described it as highly barbaric act.

Speaking to rediff.com on phone from Lucknow, he said that it reminded the party of the emergency days."Party president Nitin Gadkari ji will give a detailed reaction at a press conference in Lucknow later in the day. But the manner in which the government removed Baba Ramdev is condemnable," Javadekar said.

Prashant Bhushan, one of the civil society members on the drafting committee on Lokpal Bill, called the act as totally undemocratic.

"This could have been avoided. The situation could have been worse had there been a stampede at the grounds. The government moved in because they did not want this to turn into another Anna Hazare-like situation", he said. Swami Agnivesh was resting and hence chose not to comment.

Default After crackdown, Ramdev reaches Dehra Dun

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev was flown to Dehra Dun on Sunday from New Delhi by a special plane after the police swooped down on his hunger strike at the Ramleela maidan in a midnight operation.

Ramdev, who was initially taken to an undisclosed destination from the protest site, was put into an aircraft by the Delhi police from the Palam airport, officials said.

On his arrival at the Jolly Grant airport near Dehra Dun, Ramdev, who was alone, was received by Uttarakhand government officials, they said.

"He was alone when he landed. He was received by officials at the airport. He will now proceed to Haridwar where he has an ashram," Dehra Dun senior superintendent of police G S Martolia said.

While leaving the airport for his ashram, he refused to speak to media-persons, saying that he will hold a press conference later.

Default Sonia Gandhi does not love Indians: Ramdev

An emotional and angry Baba Ramdev on Sunday sharply criticised Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Addressing the first press conference after his dramatic arrest on Sunday morning, Baba Ramdev claimed that he was forcibly shifted to his ashram in Hardwar from New Delhi's Ramleela maidan.

Alleging a conspiracy, he claimed: "They wanted to kidnap me and kill me or send me somewhere." He also vowed to continue his fast.

    Default What Baba Ramdev wants

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who has threatened to field candidates in every Lok Sabha constituency in 2014, has stopped the Union government in its tracks with a set of demands, ranging from the serious to the bizarre.

The demands of the jetsetting Baba whose acolytes recently bought him a little Scottish island to open an ashram include:

Tough Lokpal Bill, with a provision for death sentence for the corrupt, especially corrupt officials
Immediate return of all black money stashed away in tax havens abroad to the country
Declaring all wealth in foreign countries being held illegally by Indians as national property and charging those with such accounts under the sedition laws
Abolishing Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 currency notes
Disabling the operations of any bank which belongs to a country that is a tax haven
Replacing the British-inherited system of governance, administration, taxation, education, law and order with a swadeshi alternative
Reforming the electoral system to ensure that the Prime Minister is directly elected by people
Ensuring that all citizens declare annually their incomes
Bringing income-tax details under the Right to Information Act
Increasing substantially the Minimum Support Price of grains
Making wages of different categories of labourers uniform across the country
Revoking the Land Acquisition Act, as farmers should not be deprived of their land for industry
Promoting Hindi at the expense of English.
