Elizabeth Taylor dies; screen legend was 79
Elizabeth Taylor, the legendary actress who has been famous since she starred in National Velvet at the age of 12, has died. She won two Academy Awards, for Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf? and Butterfield 8 (watch her win here; the victory came soon after she had almost died of pneumonia), appeared in over 50 movies including Cleopatra and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, was an early AIDS activist, had notoriously violet eyes, and was married eight times, most famously twice to Richard Burton (an intense, scandalous, on-set pairing that made the couple the biggest gossip story of their time). Taylor, who hadn't left the hospital since being admitted in February, died of congestive heart failure.
Oscar Winning actress and movie goddess, Elizabeth Taylor, died this morning at the age of 79. Mrs. Taylor starred in over 50 Hollywood movies, and used her influence to become a pioneer in AIDS activism, raising over $200 million dollars for AIDS research.
Taylor was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2004 and had been being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since early February. She has struggled with her health for years, and in July 2009, @DameElizabeth tweeted to her fans regarding the loss of Michael Jackson, her long time best friend,
"I'm home from the hospital sore, but intact. Of course I'm still grieving for Michael ... I always will."
At the time, many believed that Taylor was admitted into the hospital to grieve the loss of her longtime friend.
Off-screen, Taylor also grabbed headlines for her eight marriages, twice to actor Richard Burton--met while filming 1963’s Cleopatra--all but one ending in divorce. In a Harper’s Bazaar interview with reality star Kim Kardashian, Taylor made a statement in regards to her many marriages,
"I never planned to acquire a lot of jewels or a lot of husbands,” stated Taylor, "For me, life happened, just as it does for anyone else."
She will be dearly missed.
