Happy Birthday, Govinda!
Govinda, fondly called 'Chi Chi' turned 44 on December 21. We trace his Bollywood journey through the years.
Govinda was the sixth child born to actors Nirmala Devi and Arun Kumar Ahuja. His parents married in 1941 and enjoyed a good life in the up-market suburb Bandra but a financial crisis forced them to move up north to the obscure Virar. Govinda grew up there in hard times.
Govinda got addicted to dancing after watching the John Travolta starrer Saturday Night Fever. He would practice dancing everyday. When no career worked out for him, he tried his hand at acting. After a couple of commercial, he made his debut with Ilzaam opposite Neelam in 1986. The film was a hit and plenty of other offers poured in for the newcomer. He and Neelam scored many more hits like Love 86, Khudgarz and Hatya in the late 80s.
Govinda moved to drama with the critically acclaimed Zulm ki Hukumat, Hum, Jeete Hain Shaan Se and Dariya Dil.
He is most remembered for his No. 1 films with director David Dhawan and actress Karishma Kapur. The Govinda-David collaboration started in with Shola aur Shabnam, Aankhen and Raja Babu, moving on to Collie No.1, Hero No.1, Deewana Mastana, Saajan Chale Sasural, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Jodi No.1 and most recently Partner. Govinda is mainly known for his comic timing and flexible dance moves.
After a series of flops like Albela, Hadh kar di aapne, Sukh, Chalo ishq Ladaye, an overweight Govinda made a comeback with Akshay Kumar starrer Bhagam Bhag. Recently, his performances in Salaam-e-Ishq and Partner were loved by audiences. He shares good screen chemistry with Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt and is friends with them in real life too. In fact Salman is helping him get back into shape.
He has won a couple of IIFA, Filmfare and Zee Cine awards in his career.
He was most recently seen in the flop film, Money Hain toh Honey Hain and his over-the-top acting was panned. Life Partner, Main aur Mrs Khanna, Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Raavana, Run Bhola Run and Banda yeh Bindaas Hai are his upcoming films.
Govinda has been married to Sunita since 1987 and they have two children: Narmada and Yashvardhan. In his career, he has been linked to actresses like Neelam, Karishma Kapur, and most recently Rani Mukherjee. His daughter wants to get into films as well. Govinda is a Member of Parliament since 2004.
His days as a top actor may be over but he will always be remembered for his rags to riches story and he will always occupy a special place in the hearts of his fans. We wish Govinda a very happy birthday and many more joyful years to come.
