Ryan ten Doeschate added two wickets to his stunning hundred as Netherlands pushed England mighty close in Nagpur
England 296 for 4 (Strauss 88, Trott 62) beat Netherlands 292 for 6 (ten Doeschate 119*, Cooper 47) by six wickets
England and Netherlands played a thrilling encounter at Nagpur in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
England had not expected the force with which Netherlands came out against them.
Netherlands overcame pressure of being the minnows with a brilliant batting performance. All-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate was the main man for Netherlands and he lived up to what was expected from him. He scored a magnificently paced century against the country where he has played most of his professional cricket. He put on good stands with Cooper and his captain to steer Netherlands to a very challenging 292.
However, Englandís performance in the field will be questioned. They seemed to have no focus and made plenty of mistakes that you wouldnít normally expect of an international team of their standard. The bowling was also lackluster as was Straussí captaincy on the field. There were at least 5 instances where the English captain completely switched off and did not even realize that he didnít have a minimum of 4 fielders within the 30 yard circle. There will be a lot of questions asked about their performance in the field.
Their batting, however, was a completely different story. Kevin Pietersen started off extremely well before falling to yet another left arm spinner. But captain Strauss and Englandís Mr. Dependable Jonathan Trott steadied the ship with crucial half centuries. Strauss fell at 88 and Trott was stumped down the leg side in the sixties, leaving England nearly 7.5 runs an over to get in the last 10 overs.
But Netherlandsí bowlers didnít do well enough and the field setting showed inexperience. Even in the bowling department, it was Man of the Match ten Doeschate who picked up 2. In the end, England won with an over to spare and 6 wickets in hand. Fair play to the boys in Orange.
