Default Bangalore, heaven for illegal Bangla immigrants

For Naimuddin (name changed), life became rosy once he entered Bangalore. This Bangladeshi sneaked into the country via West Bengal. Though the agent had asked for Rs 25,000, he paid only Rs 5,000 after tough bargaining.

Bangalore had given him more than he had dreamt of. He has been earning Rs 250 to Rs 300 per day by taking up painting and carpentry works in the city.

He is not alone. Thousands of Bangladeshis who enter the city take up small jobs. While most of them are daily wage earners, others indulge in illegal activities like circulating counterfeit currencies, drug peddling, robbery and dacoity.

It is quest for better economic opportunities that drives these Bangladeshis to illegally enter India. But what is causing concern to the authorities is that some indulge in criminal and terrorist activities.

The arrest of a man, a woman and a child on Sunday for not possessing valid papers brings the focus back on illegal Bangla immigrants.

Joint commissioner of police Alok Kumar said police do not have the exact figures on the illegal immigrants in the city. "We have received messages that a few Bangla citizens are involving in terrorist activities. We are keeping tabs on them. Till now we have found no evidence,'' he said.

He said most of them provide fake address proof. "This makes it difficult to track them when needed. But their language gives the clue," he added.

It may be recalled that around 50 Bangla citizens vanished from BIAL premises in 2010 when police began a random check. These included those who used to clean the runway and other sensitive areas inside BIAL.
