    Default Red Meat Associated With Esophageal, Stomach Cancer

    here is some more bad news for red meat-lovers after a recent research has pointed out that people consuming higher amount of meat might have a higher risk of developing cancer of the throat and stomach in comparison to those who eat lesser amount. The results of the study came to light after it was published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology recently.

    In order to carry out the study, researchers observed an estimated 500,000 adults in the United States in the age group of 50 to 71 years for a period of ten years. Among the individuals, it was found that only very few of them developed cancerous condition in their esophagus or stomach but among the individuals who consumed large amounts of meat, the chances of developing cancer was much more. Following the research, the scientists concluded that those who ate the highest amount of red-meat had 79 per cent higher risk of developing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that those who consumed lesser amount of meat. Moreover, the study hinted that the risk of developing cancer in the upper part of the stomach accentuated among individuals who consumed greater amount of heterocyclic amines (HCA’s), which is a compound that is formed when red meat is cooked in high temperature.

    Meanwhile, the researchers have emphasized that although the results of the study indeed adds to the increasing evidence about a link between red meat and cancer, due to the limitations of the study it cannot be concluded that red meat is the causative factor in certain kind of cancers. Possibly more studies may help in finding the truth.
