Manmohan Singh lefts Vajpayee behind, he is now third longest serving PMManmohan Singh overtook Atal Bihari Vajpayee to become the third longest serving Prime Minister of India, clocking 2,273 days in office on Wednesday. For a man who took over the country's top job under extraordinary circumstances, it's been nothing short of a heady ride.
Manmohan Singh was probably most surprised when Sonia Gandhi chose him to lead the government, as she stepped down to take care of the party and politics. It started the rein of a strange twosome at the top, where the non-elected Manmohan Singh handled the government, while Gandhi took care of the politics and party. With a fractious coalition including the Left parties who wanted to run the government by remote control, nobody expected much out of him or the UPA.
But Singh turned out to be a man of strong ideas, and more important, determination. His attitude of detached interest, being soft-spoken and talking in economists' jargon, a marked inability to do the kind of flesh-pressing politics that is the hallmark of Indian politicians set him apart. You could find any number of political analysts in those days who wrote him off as an intelligent man and a man of integrity, but "you know, he's not a politician," they said pityingly.
Singh did not contest it. In fact, he was fond of saying how he was an "accidental" Prime Minister. For the most part, he treated his job as if life had given him an unexpected opportunity to steer the fortunes of this nation - for the second time....being a human...
