Highlights: Day 1 | India vs Sri Lanka | 3rd Test Colombo 2010

Pragyan Ojha added two wickets to his overnight haul of two but Sri Lanka consolidated on the second morning at the P Sara Oval
Watch cricket highlights: India vs Sri Lanka – Day 1 of the 3rd Test at Colombo played on August 3, 2010

    Scoreline: Sri Lanka 293/4 Sangakkara 75, Samaraweera 65 no, Mahela 56, Dilshan 41 | Ojha 2

Not often when Dilshan’s around that someone else takes charge of a game – super stuff from Sanga to go after the spinners following some better bowling by Ishanth and Mithun. He’s been looking to end Ojha’s fledgling test career all series – must be some IPL-carryover grudge.

Yuvraj apparently was taunted by some drunk spectators. They probably didn’t like the book he was reading.

    Highlights: Day 2 | SL vs India | 3rd Test 2010

Suresh Raina's 64 kept India in the contest on the third day at the P Sara Oval

Watch cricket highlights: Day 2 of the 3rd Test – Sri Lanka vs India played on August 4, 2010

Scoreline: Sri Lanka 425 all out Samaraweera 137 no, Mathews 45 | Ojha 4, Ishanth 3
    India (1st Inn) 180/2 Themanwhosenameshallnotbetakeninvain 97 no (87), Tendulkar 40 no

By the time the-man-whose-name-shall-not-be-taken-in-vain had stepped across and played a shot he normally avoids to Welegedera to reach 42, it was already one of his best test knocks. With the pitch deemed to break up, looks like the last 3 days here could well make up for a relatively dull series thus far.

    SL 45/2 (2nd Inn) | Sehwag 2

Looks like Yuvraj will get to finish reading that book, the way Raina has looked comfortable in his test role.

C’mon VVS – make that hundred. You make a hundred and it sticks in people’s heads. A 70 or 80 just fades away.

Highlights: Day 4 | Sri Lanka vs India | 3rd Test PSS 2010

Sri Lanka and India fought a tense battle on a gripping final day, with the visitors gradually tilting the scales in their favour as they aimed for a series-levelling win. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman survived a probing spell from Suraj Randiv, batting positively amid some fortune, to steady India after the early loss of nightwatchman Ishant Sharma.

Highlights: Day 5 | India vs Sri Lanka | 3rd Test 2010 PSS

MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara pose with the series trophy, Sri Lanka v India, 3rd Test, P Sara Oval, 5th day, August 7, 2010
Watch cricket highlights: Day 5 of the 3rd Test – India vs Sri Lanka played at the P Sara Oval on August 7, 2010

Scoreline: India win (target 257) VVS Laxman 103 no, Sachintendulkar 54, Suresh Raina 41 no | Randiv 5

As with any job or field, experience does count. Big time. To hold back your game and play the field and situation. The Sachin-VVS partnership sort of harked back to their huge partnership vs Aus in 2003. Sachin, solid in mindset and VVS, the more freeflowing.

Some would say Raina’s skip down to Malinga early on was a matter of nerves. But I think it provided a stunning insight into the way he thinks. Sri Lanka all morning had looked weary, but were revived by the exit of Tendulkar. The crowd too was suddenly involved. Raina’s immediate attempts to quell this might have failed, but consider this – he got a place in the side only because Yuvraj was unwell. He’d had a couple of really good knocks prior to this. To have the balls to put all this on the line (assuming his shot precipitated an Indian collapse) and back himself is amazing.

As for Laxman, he’s scored quite well over the last year. But while often not looking like, you know, the real VVS. Just day-before, I pulled out some of his old knocks vs Australia to remind myself – should have been patient and waited for today.

At the end of a series, one tends to only remember how it ended. Sri Lanka dominated the first half of this tour, so if ever there was an evenstevens, drawn series, this was it.
