Argentina coach Diego Maradona has revealed that Barcelona striker Lionel Messi would captain the team against Greece on Tuesday. After two back to back win over Nigeria and South Korea, Argentina has almost cemented their place in the round of 16.

After two matches, Argentina now leads the Group B with 6 points and a +4 goal difference. So, now Maradona has decided to rest several of his senior players including captain Javier Mascherano, Juan Sebastián Verón, Gabriel Heinze and Walter Samuel for the Greece encounter.

Argentina fans would love to see Lionel Messi wearing the captain’s armband. Maradona has expressed that the player himself became very emotional when he was asked to become captain against Greece.

“His moment has come. When I told him what I told him, he was very emotional. It's a wonderful thing. We already saw it in training, he's having a great time training today. But you will only find out what the thing is tomorrow, when we take the field,” Maradona said in a press conference on Monday.

Lionel Messi was instrumental behind Argentina’s victories over Nigeria and South Korea. The Barcelona star set up 3 out of 4 Argentina goals against South Korea.

Before the tournament got underway, there were many who were doubtful about Messi’s impact on Argentina’s performance. However, after two matches Messi has now become the heart of Argentina side. The only thing that he could not yet achieve is scoring a goal himself.
