Cricketing legends Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting have been called on to speak against the growing violence against the Indian students following the murder of Nitin Garg here on Saturday.

Spokesman of the Federation of Indian Students in Australia, Gautam Gupta has urged Warne and Ponting to come out and voice their concerns over the ''racist attacks'' as the two cricketers enjoy a huge fan following in India.

''They (Warne and Ponting) should jump in and defend Indian students in Australia. Shane Warne is an icon in India - he has millions of fans,'' Gupta said.

Gupta also claimed that the brutal murder was a racist attack and said, ''Everyone I have spoken to says there's a lot of fear and a lot of anger about it.'' ''His mobile phone and his wallet were still there.

''There's a lot of frustration because of the question of racism.

What we have to see is how this anger is manifested. From their point of view, there can be no other motivation than race,'' he added.

The 21-year-old accounting graduate, Garg was on his way to his job at a Hungry Jacks fast food outlet in West Melbourne on Saturday night when he was attacked.

Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist had once condemned the attacks on Indian students and had urged his countrymen to put an end to the attacks.
